GANNON UNIVERSITY FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS

            Mark J. Gaeta has joined Gannon as a major gifts officer, a position in which he will meet with university alumni and friends locally, regionally, and nationally. Gaeta in 1987 graduated from Gannon with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and formerly spent 15 years as a sales manager and supervisor at Verizon Communications in Erie, where he oversaw 20 employees and managed an annual budget of $550,000. He worked for the Manufacturer’s Association of Northwest Pennsylvania prior to joining Gannon. Gaeta is a member of the Gannon University Boosters, the Knights of Columbus, and Sacred Heart parish.

            Homer L. Smith, Jr. has been named assistant director of alumni services and will focus on increasing alumni participation in university events. Smith comes to Gannon after working for the City of Erie as the Americans with Disabilities Act/Labor Compliance Officer. He also continues to work as an NCCP/Counselor at Gannondale New Horizons Intensive Treatment Unit, a position he has held since 1976. Smith has served as a member of the Gannon University National Alumni Board since 2003 and established the African-American Alumni Committee in 2002. He is a member of Gannon’s Martin Luther King Holiday Committee and serves on the boards of the Erie branch of the NAACP and GECAC. He graduated from Gannon in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in social science education.

Maria L. Garase, Ph.D., assistant professor, criminal justice, presented a paper at the Interdisciplinary Roots and Branches of Criminology conference, held in Toronto. Garase’s paper was titled “Strain and Road Rage: A Likely Link.” The paper and presentation were based on her forthcoming book titled “Road Rage.”

            Charles A. Bennett, assistant professor, finance program, and director of the Gannon University Center for Economic Education, is listed in the acknowledgements of Microeconomics, a textbook co-authored by R. Glenn Hubbard of Columbia University and by Anthony Patrick O’Brien of Lehigh University. Bennett is listed in the section titled “Class Testers.” The section reads, “We are grateful to both the professors who class tested manuscript and their students for providing clear-cut recommendations on how to make chapters interesting, relevant and comprehensive.” Bennett is also credited as a reviewer.

Agenda items include the 2006-07 tuition schedule, faculty/staff compensation rates, the preliminary budget for FY07; an update on Fall 2006 applications, deposits and related enrollment information. A poster session on outcomes assessment will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Zurn 104

  • Tuesday, February 21 Poetry Reading: presented by Berwyn Moore, associate professor, English. The reading will be held from 12-1 p.m. in the Boardroom of Old Main. Moore will read from her latest book, Dissolution of Ghosts. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Penny Smith at ext. 7748.

HEARD ON CAMPUS

  • Cancellation: the poetry reading that was to be given tomorrow by Berwyn Moore has been cancelled due to the death of her mother. It will be rescheduled for some time in March.

  • The American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days are scheduled for March 20-26. Order forms should be returned by Wednesday, Feb. 15. The goal is to break last year’s total of $1,162. Flowers will be delivered on March 22. For more information or to place an order, contact Melissa Lesniewski, Daffodil Days Coordinator, at ext. 7597.

  • Nash Library invites Gannon faculty, staff, and administrators to join its new book club. Library staff would like to start the club after mid-semester break and meet either during lunch (12-1 p.m.) or after work (4:30-5:30 p.m.). The goal is to meet a couple of times a month to discuss book(s) that the group has chosen to read. Both works of fiction and non-fiction will be considered.
