NEARLY $9,000 RAISED
FROM RECENT THINK PINK BASKETBALL GAME
As was mentioned at today’s
Community Meeting, nearly $9,000 was raised to help support breast cancer
research and awareness at the “Think Pink” game, hosted by Gannon Women’s
Basketball, on Saturday, Feb. 9. All proceeds will remain local and will
be donated to the Erie Unit of the American Cancer Society—Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer.
The game was a success in
more than monetary measurements. An estimated 1,185 people attended the
women’s game, reaching a season attendance high for the team with 600
people more than any other game this season. In addition, approximately
2,248 people attended the men’s game that afternoon, also a season high.
For the women’s team, Saturday’s game marked the highest attendance since
the February 23, 2004 game versus Mercyhurst College, which saw a crowd of
approximately 2,217.
In keeping with the theme of
the day, several pink items were sold to raise funds, including Think Pink
t-shirts, breast cancer awareness candles, and pink ribbon cookies. At the
game, members of the women’s basketball team wore pink uniforms, and an
additional 13 pink jerseys were sold as well, one per team member. During
a time-out in the first half of the game, 25 breast cancer survivors were
individually recognized by name.
“Think Pink” was a week-long
breast cancer awareness campaign sponsored by the Women’s Basketball
Coaches Association (WBCA). The Gannon women’s team was inspired by team
member Abby Bunstine of Chillicothe, Ohio, whose mother, Lynn Bunstine,
was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Lynn also attended
Saturday’s game and gave the opening prayer.
Local sponsors included:
gold sponsors, Northwest Savings Bank and Danielle M. Duchini, D.O. and
The Center for Breast Health; and Gannon Women’s Basketball Program, Erie
Insurance, Hamot for Women, and Silkscreen Unlimited.
