GANNON TO HOST EVENTS FOR CATHOLIC COLLEGES WEEK, FEB. 17-23

Gannon University will observe National Catholic Colleges Week, Feb. 17-23, through a series of campus events.

The events will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 17 with Gannon’s Knight with Scholars program, a program administered by the Office of Admissions for accepted students. Judy McDonald, a Catholic comedian, will perform at 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room. The students in the Knight with Scholars program also have the option of attending a Mass Sunday night at 9 p.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

The schedule for the rest of the week is as follows:

Monday, Feb. 18 – Fundraising for the university’s alternative break service trips will be held in the lobby of the Waldron Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The trips will be held over Gannon’s spring and summer breaks and will take students to New York City, New Orleans, South Dakota, and Mexico.

Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Guest speaker, Dr. Michael Galligan-Stierle, vice president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. He will speak to Gannon students, faculty, and staff about spirituality and leadership. The session for faculty and staff will be held at 3 p.m. in the Yehl Room, the session for students at 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room.

Thursday, Feb. 21 – Archbishop Gannon Day is designed for juniors and seniors from local and regional Catholic high schools and will begin at 11 a.m. with the university’s weekly Community Mass in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel. A complimentary lunch open to the Gannon Community will follow the Mass. Participating students also will attend the lunch and participate in meetings with representatives from the university’s Office of Admissions, Office of Campus Ministry, and Center for Social Concerns.

Also on Thursday, an Evening of Recollection for Gannon University faculty and staff will be offered with Erie Bishop Donald Trautman. Prayer, dinner, and penance will be offered from 4-7 p.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel and the Yehl Room.

And, Ichthi, a Catholic faith-sharing group, will host adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for Gannon and Mecyhurst College students from 8-9 p.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel. Bishop Trautman will join the students.

Saturday, Feb. 23 – At the basketball games at the Hammermill Center between Gannon and Mercyhurst, Father Jason Glover of Gannon and Father James Piszker of Mercyhurst will pray together on behalf of the two schools.

  • Lenten Evening of Recollection with Bishop Trautman: An Evening of Recollection for faculty and staff will be held Thursday, Feb. 21 as part of Gannon’s events for Catholic Colleges Week. Bishop Trautman graciously and enthusiastically accepted our invitation to lead an evening of prayer. Everyone is welcome; dinner is included; there is no cost; RSVP’s are required by Monday, Feb. 18; dress is casual; and in order to get the full benefit of the program, please plan on attending the entire program. We invite you to come celebrate with us this unique opportunity. To attend, please respond to grande001@gannon.edu by Feb. 18. The schedule:

    • 4 p.m. – Reflection by Bishop Trautman in Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, and personal quiet time.
    • 4:45 p.m. – Evening Prayer in the Chapel.
    • 5 p.m. – Supper served in the Yehl Room.
    • 6 p.m. – Reflection by Bishop Trautman in the Chapel.
    • 6:30 p.m. – Lenten Reconciliation Service in the Chapel, including the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance.
  • Daffodil Days are here again: The American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days are coming March 24-30. Our goal is to break last year’s sales of $1,485. Daffodils will be delivered to campus on Wednesday, March 2. Items for sale are: Boyd’s Bear and a Bunch ($25); Spirit of Hope vase & a bunch ($15); Bunch of 10 Flowers ($8); Project Hope/Gift of Hope ($10/$20); and Romolo’s chocolate lollipop ($1.50). Friday, Feb. 15 will be the final day to place orders.   • The university will celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week Feb. 11-18. The Gannon Community is invited to participate in a series of events throughout the week, including a Busy Person’s Retreat (Feb. 10-14), Waldron Sweet Treats (Feb. 12), Gathering in Praise “Diversity” (Feb. 14), and GUSSA Treat Day and the MCU Soul Food Dinner, both on Feb. 15. Random Acts of Kindness Week is a great opportunity to show each other respect and to enhance community spirit and pride. It is sponsored by the Chaplain’s Office, the Gannon Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the Gannon University Support Staff Association (GUSSA), Minority Cultures United, Service Learning, Student Organizations and Leadership Development, Women’s Leadership, and the Waldron Center.

  • Nash Library is sponsoring a 2008 Oscar contest. Students, faculty, and staff can pick up a ballot at the Library’s Circulation Desk or by downloading one from the Library’s web site (www.gannon.edu/library). The Oscar Display in the Library’s lobby has information on all of this year’s nominees, so be sure to check it out.  The contest ends on Friday, February 22nd at 12:00 pm.  Ballots must be submitted via email or turned in at the Circulation Desk of the library by noon on the 22nd of February in order to be eligible.  The entry with the most correct answers will be the winner. Tie-breaker questions will be asked if necessary.  The winner will receive a movie-related prize, and will be contacted by phone or e-mail on Feb. 25. Good Luck!

  • Tuesday, February 12 Waldron Sweet Treats: Get your random treats, sponsored by the Waldron Center and Gannon Clubs Organizations. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Part of Random Acts of Kindness Week.

  • Wednesday, February 13 Norwegian Hearts: Bring a brown bag lunch, explore Norwegian culture, and make Norwegian sour cream waffles and heart-shaped baskets in room 341 of Zurn. Sponsored by the International Student Office.

  • Wednesday, February 13Free Financial Aid Workshop: The workshop will cover the entire financial aid process as well as a step-by-step review of the questions on the FAFSA. 6:30 p.m. in room 1200 of the Palumbo Center.

  • Thursday, February 14 Gathering in Praise Diversity: Ecumenical Prayer Service, 11 a.m. in the Chapel.

  • Friday, February 15 Soul Food Dinner: The dinner, sponsored by Minority Cultures United, will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Piano Lounge on the first floor of Waldron and is open to students, faculty, and staff.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Gannon Wellness Fair: Gannon hosted its fourth annual Wellness Fair in the Yehl Room last week. The nearly 150 faculty and staff who attended were able to assess comprehensively their overall health and well being. Employees also were able to take advantage of numerous tests and screenings to measure a variety of health factors.
