GANNON TO HONOR DR. KING THROUGH SERIES OF EVENTS

Gannon University will host a number of events throughout January in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

The first event will kick off on Friday, Jan. 18, when Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra, conducted and directed by Bruce Morton Wright, will perform a Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The concert will feature the Shiloh Baptist Church Choir and Evangelist D.M. Jamerson, minister of music, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick, Church, 130 East Fourth Street. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 871-7755.

Other events are as follows:

Saturday, Jan. 19 – Service Project: “Stuff the Bus!” 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Gannon students will spend the day collecting items from shoppers at the Wal-Mart at 1900 Keystone Drive, Summit Township, and the Wal-Mart in Titusville, 11415 Hydetown Road. All items collected will be donated to area non-profit agencies and organizations. The event is sponsored by the Northwest PA Children & Youth AmeriCorps*VISTA Project, the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority, and Wal-Mart. The event will be repeated from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Wal-Mart stores in Edinboro, 108 Washington Towne Blvd., and in Meadville, 16086 Conneaut Lake Road.

Sunday, January 20 – Worship: Special liturgies in honor of Dr. King will be offered during the 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. masses at Gannon’s Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach Street. Open to the public.

Monday, January 21 – Several events are scheduled:

  • Nonviolence Training: Beginner and Advanced Sessions. Offered from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in room 219 of Gannon’s Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. The sessions will be led by Sr. Anne McCarthy and the Ochaleks. To register, call Dr. Sara Licthenwalter, assistant professor, social work program, at 814-871-7387. Sponsored by the Gannon University Center for Social Concerns.
  • Memorial Prayer Service: 10:45-11:30 a.m., Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach Street. Hosted by Gannon’s Student Government Association.
  • Memorial March: Gather at 11:30 a.m. in Perry Square and join march to MLK Center at West Third and Chestnut streets.
  • Martin Luther King Memorial Luncheon: 12:45 p.m., simple sandwiches and soup for Memorial March participants. First floor, Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. All are welcome.

Memorial Service: “March with America in Erie, Pa.” 1:30 p.m., Hammermill Center, corner of Peach and South Park Row. Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., president of Gannon University, will be the speaker.

 

 

RECENT NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

News of interest on and around campus...

  • Thanks to Gannon colleagues for their assistance with external media interview requests. Virginia Arp, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, did interviews with WICU-12 and WJET-24 during the Center’s Tech Buffet, held Friday.

  • Please join your colleagues in congratulating Dr. Robin Powers, associate professor, psychology, and Michelle Wiley, academic advisor, Academic Advising Center, on their receipt of the 2008 NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) Region 2 Advising Award. Powers was selected in the faculty advisor category, and Wiley was chosen to represent the primary advisor category from Region 2, which consists of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. This award is presented to individuals who demonstrate qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students. Each will receive a free one-year membership to NACADA and free registration for this year’s regional conference, to be held April 16-18 in Pittsburgh. Both will be formally recognized at the conference. This is a great recognition for Powers and Wiley and for Gannon. They were nominated by Marc Adkins, director, advising and retention.

  • Summer Orientation update: The Office of New Student Services asks faculty and staff to encourage students to apply for positions as Summer 2008 Orientation Advisors. Applications are available in the New Student Services Office and should be returned by Friday, Feb. 1. For more information call ext. 7596.

  • Nominations now can be submitted for the Excellence in Undergraduate Advising Award. If you know of a deserving faculty member who demonstrates the qualities of an exceptional academic advisor, please consider nominating them. The nomination form can be found at http://my.gannon.edu/special/forms/index.html. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb. 1.   • Norman Mailer... Kurt Vonnegut… Ingmar Bergman… Anna Nicole Smith… Luciano Pavarotti… Lady Bird Johnson... Tammy Faye Bakker... Evel Knievel. These are just some of the notable people who left us in 2007. Throughout January, Nash Library is featuring a display, located on its first floor, recognizing some of the notable people who died last year. Please stop by and read about some of the many personalities who, though now passed on, have left us with memories and in many cases, contributions that will continue to enhance those of us left behind.

  • Wednesday, January 16 Financial Aid Workshop: The workshop will cover the entire financial aid process as well as a step-by-step review of the questions on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), as well as definitions of terms that parents and students should know and the various aid programs available. The workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Palumbo room 1200.

  • Thursday, January 17 Community Mass: Offered at 11 a.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

  • Friday, January 18 Faculty and Staff Community Meeting: 3 p.m. in the Yehl Room. The agenda includes updates on the three-college restructuring; the Martin Luther King events, lecture, and Memorial Service; spring 2008 registration and returning students; fall 2008 recruitment and enrollment; 2008 summer school; and University Advancement activities.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Technology Buffet: Charles Bennett (seated), assistant professor, finance program, talks with Dr. Rick Prokop, assistant professor, marketing program, during Friday’s Technology Buffet, hosted by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Bennett was one of the presenters and spoke on the subject of The CETL Process for Restructuring the Principles of Economics Courses.” The Tech Buffet was very successful, with nearly 140 people attending.
