Job Hunting Tips
To speak with a career counselor about your job search or to inquire further about job listings, email us at
CDES@gannon.edu
or call 814-871-7680.
Many employers seek college students for summer jobs. It is important to apply early, to secure the best possible job. To plan ahead, follow through with some of the ideas listed below.
If you want to work at your old job again, tell your employer you're interested. Ask if a spot can be reserved for you. Usually employees who do a good job and work hard are invited back for the summer months.
If you need a new job for the summer:
-
Visit Career Services.
We keep summer job listings, and we can help you develop a resume.
-
Look into co-op and internship opportunities, to get experience in your major. Cheryl Rink, our Co-op Coordinator, keeps listings on file and can assist you with connecting to employers.
-
Contact employers and request applications and information. Do this in March, April and May to receive full consideration.
-
Use networking! Ask your professors, family and relatives, friends, friends' parents, and anyone else you can think of if they have any leads.
-
Be willing to travel. Many outdoor jobs, especially camps and environmental positions, require you to live on-site or nearby.
-
Determine what your priorities are for your summer job. What's most important? This will help you decide between offers. A great paying job will help pay the bills. A job in your major field will give you valuable experience and can pay off when looking for a job after you earn your degree.
