FORENSIC
CHEMIST with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Face
the great challenge presented by the scientifically sophisticated illicit
drug manufacturers. Unusual compounds are constantly created and sold.
These drugs must be quickly identified to permit enforcement of federal
regulations and prevent the availability of such drugs for abuse. As part
of your regular work, you will be involved in: working with a wide range
of state-of-the-art instruments that analyze many different types of
evidence; providing expert testimony in federal and state courts to
support the DEA enforcement mission; conducting research in the
development of new methods of analysis; developing intelligence data used
to determine trends in international trafficking of illicit drugs; and
supporting DEA Special Agents, Task Force Officers and Diversion

RESEARCH SPECIALIST positions with the University of
Pittsburgh: Research II- UPCI Research Lab- Latimer.
Be familiar with basic bench biology principles: sterile technique,
solution making, pH, centrifugation, electrophoresis. Responsible for
assisting the chief tech with maintaining order in the laboratory (keeping
the laboratory organized and stocked with chemicals and supplies). Will
assist in maintaining established cell lines from human breast tissue.
Will learn how to perform basic data analysis and graphing using
Kaliedagraph , MS office suite, Adobe Photoshop. Responsible for solution
making and RNA/DNA/protein preparation. No prior training is required

Research II- UPCI Research Lab- Donnenberg, V.
Full-time candidate as a Research Specialist II for the laboratory of Dr.
Vera Donnenberg. This is a University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI)
laboratory. Incumbent will perform routine lab tasks and be involved in
several studies that help examine immune function in patients with
cancer. In addition, candidate will be taught in studies of cancer and
normal stem cells. As part of this body of work, her/his duties will
include cell separation and flow cytometric staining and analysis, cell
culture, DNA and RNA extractions, RNA purification, set-up of Quantitative
RT-PCR reactions, troubleshooting for flow cytometric assays, processing

BIOLOGISTS, CHEMISTS, and MATHEMATICAL STATISTICIANS are among
the experts in demand as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration begins a
multi-year hiring initiative. The agency plans to fill more than 1,300
positions within the next several months for its Public Health Mission to
assure the safety and/or efficacy of human and veterinary drugs,
biological products, medical devices, food, cosmetics and products that
emit radiation." In fiscal year 2008 alone, the FDA is looking to fill
more than 600 new positions and to backfill over 700 others to implement
the FDA Amendments Act of 2007, the Food Protection Plan and the Import
Safety Action Plan. The Office of Personnel Management has granted
Direct-Hire Authority to the FDA, an operating division of the Department
of Health and Human Services. Direct-Hire Authority is an appointing
authority OPM can give to federal agencies for filling vacancies when a
critical hiring need or severe shortage of candidates exists. It expedites
hiring of qualified candidates by eliminating certain rating and ranking
preferences. Qualified candidates could be on the job in as little as
three weeks. Critical need occupations include chemists, biologists,
microbiologists, and mathematical statisticians. Many of these positions
are located in the Washington metropolitan area, specifically Rockville,
Silver Spring and College Park, Md., as well as across the country in the
FDA's five regions, 20 districts, more than 179 resident posts, and the

bulk solutions, active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished products
documenting all result and raw data per cGMPs. Directly responsible to
determine if analytical results conform with all appropriate written

be responsible to troubleshoot, maintain and calibrate various analytical
