TRUSTEE, FORMER PROFESSOR TO BE HONORED AT SCHOLARSHIP CELEBRATION

            Gannon University will host its annual Scholarship Celebration on Oct. 16.

Honored at the dinner will be former longtime Gannon faculty member David R. Frew, Ph.D., and James W. Keim, Jr. and members of the Keim family.

Each will be awarded the Archbishop Gannon Medal of Distinction, presented annually to individuals who have been instrumental in promoting the cause of Catholic higher education.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception in Old Main, corner of West Sixth and Peach streets. The dinner program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street.

Proceeds raised from the black-tie fundraiser support Gannon University scholarships. For more information on the event call 814-871-7473, or 877-GU-Alums.

 

David R. Frew, Ph.D.

Frew earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from then-Gannon College in 1964 and in 1967 earned a master’s degree (sociology) at Gannon. In 1970, he earned a doctor of business administration degree from Kent State University after having been a teaching fellow there from 1969-70 in the department of administrative sciences.

Frew also completed a year of post-doctoral study (applied physiology and psychology) at Kent State, during which time he also served as a visiting professor of management.

            In 1970, Frew joined Gannon as a professor of management. He also has taught courses in organizational theory, behavior and interpersonal relationship skills, policy, human resource management, and statistics.

            At Gannon, his other academic administrative positions included serving as the first full-time director of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, director of graduate programs, director of cooperative education, director of the graduate program in health services administration, and co-director of the center for management development.

Frew has written several books about Lake Erie. His works include Kiss of the Devil Wind: The Sinking of the Steamship Gerken; The Lake Erie Quadrangle: Waters of Repose; and Home Port Erie: Voices of Silent Images.

In addition, Frew also has had more than 100 scholarly papers and articles published. He has given presentations, on areas including stress management, to many major organizations.

Since leaving Gannon as a full-time professor in 2002, Frew has served as executive director of the Erie Historical Society.

            He is an Erie native.

 

James W. Keim, Jr.

Keim is a senior vice president with Advest, Inc. in Erie. Advest, a financial services and investment firm, has offices in 15 states and Washington, D.C.

Keim graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School and earned a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio.

Keim has been a member of the Gannon Board of Trustees since 1997 and also has served on the Gannon Board of Incorporators. In 1997, Jim created the Jimmy Keim, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his father. Funds for the scholarship are raised from an annual golf tournament coordinated by Jim and other family members. More than 50 students have received financial support through the scholarship.

In addition to the scholarship, the Keim family helped make possible the renovation of the former Old Main Annex, now know as Keim Commons. Keim’s wife, Patty, serves on numerous Gannon committees.

The Keim family has a long association with both Gannon University and Villa Maria College. Robert Keim was a founding member of the Gannon Board of Trustees. His wife, Catherine (Kay), graduated from Villa Maria College in 1937 and was a charter member of the Mother Agnes Legacy Society. Both Robert and Kay were ardent supporters of Villa Maria College and Gannon University.

  • Thursday, September 30 Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre: “Defying Gravity” by Jane Anderson. Directed by Edward Helenski, technical director, Schuster Theatre. Scheduled for 8 p.m. Performances also will be held Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 7-9.

  • Saturday, October 2 LeapFrog! Auction: Up for bid will be 11 LeapFrog! statues and 20 miniature LeapFrog! creations. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a book signing. Bidding will begin at 8 p.m. The cost of the event is $50 per person. To be held in the Waldron Center. Proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Gannon University Scholarship Fund and the Erie Art Museum.

  • Tuesday, October 5 Graduate and Professional School Fair: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Yehl Room. More than 50 schools, including Gannon, and 100 academic programs will be represented. Call ext. 7680 or 7735 for more information.

  • Wednesday, October 6 Visit by Jesus Nebot: Nebot an award-winning Latino filmmaker, producer, and actor. One of Nebot’s films, “No Turning Back,” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in room 104 of the Zurn Science Center. On Oct. 6, he also will lead a workshop, “Key Principles to Harmonious Living in a Multicultural Society.” The workshop will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Yehl Room.   • Thursday, October 7 Lecture by Robert Novak: Novak, nationally syndicated columnist and CNN analyst, will kickoff Gannon’s symposium “Road to the White House 2004: Advocacy and Analysis.” 7:30 p.m. in Zurn 104.

  • Friday, October 22Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra: The concert will feature as soloist Wildy Zumwalt, saxophone. Performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

HEARD ON CAMPUS

  • Special thanks to Gannon colleagues for their assistance with media interviews. David Kozak, Ph.D., did an interview with Channel 35-WSEE on presidential hopeful Ralph Nader. Mary Carol Gensheimer, assistant professor of communication arts, did an interview with WQLN on her LeapFrog!, Victorian Flower Frog. The frog is located outside the northeast corner of Old Main. Griz Zimmermann, director of athletics, spoke with Jim Camp of the Erie Times-News on the athletic department's search for an associate director for compliance and operations. Doug Zimmerman, director of student living, did an interview with Kara Rhodes of the Erie Times-News on a college web site.

  • Admissions staff news: Lisa Wenner, associate director of admissions, is serving as a member of a steering committee to determine how the National Catholic College Admission Association will commemorate National Catholic Colleges Week. Christopher Tremblay, director of admissions, is co-presenting on Assess Your E-Recruitment Strategy at the National Association for College Admission Counseling Conference in Milwaukee, Wisc. The conference runs Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

  • Gannon will host its annual Fall Open House on Sunday, Nov. 7. A full day of events and activities is being planned for prospective students and their families. The day will begin with biology, chemistry, English, engineering and foreign language Scholarship Contests at 10 a.m. An optional mass will be held in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel at 11 a.m. Registration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the lobby of the Waldron Campus Center and will be followed by a welcome presentation from Dr. Garibaldi at 12:30 p.m. From 1 to 3 p.m., students and their families will have the opportunity to meet with faculty, administrators, and athletic coaches. They can also tour the campus or take trolley tours of downtown Erie.
