THREE-PART LECTURE SERIES ON EUCHARIST KICKS OFF TUESDAY NIGHT

A priest from the Diocese of Cleveland will use song and humor to explore the meaning of Catholic Mass during a Sept. 13 guest lecture at Gannon University.

The lecture, to be given by the Rev. J-Glenn Murray, S.J., will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Center, 124 West Seventh Street. It is free and open to the public.

During his lecture, Murray will discuss how the celebration of the Eucharist is meant to be a passionately engaging and powerfully transforming experience. He also will discuss how, in order for that lofty goal to be realized, the congregation must fully and actively participate. In addition, he will share how the members must be conscious and aware of the inner workings of the Mass.

Murray’s lecture is the first (of three parts) in Gannon University’s Fall 2005 Lecture Series on the Eucharist. Murray will be followed on Sept. 20 by Sister Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., president of St. Bonaventure University; and on Oct. 4 by the Rev. Scott Detisch, Ph.D., a member of the faculty at Christ the King Seminary (East Aurora, N.Y.) and a former Gannon faculty member.

All lectures are free and open to the public. For more information call 814-871-5873.

More about Rev. J-Glenn Murray

The Rev. J-Glenn Murray, S.J., is director of the Office for Pastoral Liturgy for the Diocese of Cleveland. He holds a master of divinity degree, with a concentration in liturgy, from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif. He also has pursued studies in preaching at Aquinas Institute at St. Louis University and is completing a doctorate of ministry in liturgy at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
In 1987 and 1997, Murray was liturgical coordinator for the National Black Catholic Congresses, and in 1992, he was a liturgical consultant for the same conference. He was the principal drafter of “Plenty Good Room: the Spirit and Truth of African-American Catholic Worship,” a document from the Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy and the Black Catholic Secretariat.

As an African American, Murray’s personal experience and heritage is distinct from that of most American Catholics. “I'm intensely Roman Catholic,” Murray says. “I also totally love being black.”

In addition to his Diocesan duties and workshop schedule, he periodically teaches liturgy, culture, and preaching at St. Mary’s Seminary, Cleveland, and the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley.

A Jesuit for 37 years, Murray is a frequent speaker on liturgical and cultural topics.
