GANNON'S WERG GETS NEW ANTENNA, MOVES TO NEW FREQUENCY

Hit the seek button and it will scan the airwaves and stop at 90.5-FM, the new home of Gannon University’s radio station, WERG.

WERG has installed a new antenna at the WQLN towers at 8425 Peach Street in Summit Township. The move gives WERG-FM a stronger and better signal, and has required a move to 90.5-FM from 89.9-FM so as not to interfere with a Canadian station on the 89.9-FM frequency. WERG’s old antenna, located atop Nash Library, and its proximity to the campus caused numerous interference issues in downtown Erie that made it necessary for WERG to periodically sign off the air. The new antenna location has eliminated the problem.

WERG’s mission, since signing-on in 1972, has been to educate students in the professional operation of a radio station. Gannon students gain practical experience with the actual equipment that professional broadcast operations utilize.  The staff of WERG consists of Gannon University students and community volunteers.  High school students also have the opportunity to work at WERG during the summer, making the station a valuable recruitment tool for possible communication majors at Gannon University.

WERG is active with Gannon events such as Springtopia, Preview GU and the annual WERG Red Cross blood drive. Over the years, WERG has broadcast various Gannon sporting events live, including basketball, football, baseball, and softball. Standard programming on 90.5 WERG consists of a modern rock format during the week. Super Soul Saturday, a popular weekend broadcast on WERG for over 25 years, features rhythm and blues, jazz, and soul. Sunday is dedicated to various community programming.

The official switch to 90.5-FM became official on June 30.  Tune-in and listen to 90.5 WERG.

Editor’s note: the changes at WERG were the subject of an in-depth article in the Erie Times-News. The article, written by Erica Erwin, ran on the front page of the City & Region section Thursday, July 7.
