GANNON UNIVERSITY FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Berwyn Moore Brooker, associate professor of English, recently attended and read a selection of her poetry at “Vital Lines, Vital Signs,” a poetry and medicine conference held at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Moore teaches a medical humanities course, Literature and the Healing Arts, at Gannon and has had works of poetry published in a number of national journals, including two issues of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

 

Dr. Carolynn B. Masters, associate professor and director of the Villa Maria School of Nursing, recently was elected to a two-year term as chair of the Board of the Northwest PA Area Health Education Center. The PA Area Health Education Center’s mission is to help communities meet their primary health care needs by creating a statewide infrastructure bridging community and academic resources. As chair, Masters’ responsibilities will include presiding over meetings of the organization’s Board of Trustees.

 

Karen Lumia, RN, assistant professor, Villa Maria School of Nursing, recently was selected as the 2004 National Advisor of the Year for Alpha Tau Delta, a fraternity for professional nurses and nursing students. The fraternity annually selects a National Advisor of the Year from nominees submitted by each collegiate chapter. Lumia, along with Dr. Suzanne O’Connell, assistant professor, Villa Maria School of Nursing, is a co-advisor to the Alpha Kappa chapter of ATD.

 

The Tie Dye Mini-Society Town at Edinboro Elementary School recently recognized Charles A. Bennett, assistant professor, finance, and director of Gannon's Center for Economic Education. Bennett visited the Tie Dye Town at one of its recent business sessions, which organizers dedicated to Bennett and others. During the Tie Dye Town ribbon cutting and opening ceremony, Bennett was given a key to the city. In the Mini-Society program, students run their own operating economy and society and learn to establish a community from scratch. Bennett was certified as a Mini-Society Trainer at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

 

Seven faculty members have been approved for academic tenure effective with the 2004-05 academic year. Applications for tenure were approved by the Rank, Tenure, and Academic Freedom Committee as well as the Gannon Board of Trustees and the board’s Academic Affairs Committee.

  • Dr. Suzanne L. Richard, associate professor, theology/history;
  • Dr. Pamela J. Reynolds, associate professor, physical therapy;
  • Dr. Stephen Frezza, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering;
  • Dr. Theresa Vitolo, associate professor, computer and information science;
  • Michele M. Kauffman, associate professor, physician assistant program;
  • Dr. Elisa Konieczko, associate professor, biology;
  • Dr. Timothy M. Laher, associate professor, chemistry. Laher also was awarded a promotion in rank, from assistant professor to associate professor.

 

In addition to Laher, four other faculty were approved for promotions in rank:

  • Mark A. Jubulis, Ph.D., political science, from assistant professor to associate professor;
  • Kristine S. Legters, physical therapy, from assistant professor to associate professor;
  • Sally L. LeVan, Ph.D., English, from associate professor to professor;
  • Thomas V. Upton, Ph.D., philosophy, from associate professor to professor.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Gannon faculty/administrators are invited to participate in Summer Orientation events. Three sessions remain: June 27-28 and July 11-12 and 18-19. You and a spouse/guest are invited to attend the Sunday evening Parent Socials on June 27 and July 11 and 18 in the Yehl Room from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. A picnic supper will be served in the Waldron Center at 5:15 p.m. on those dates. Members of your immediate family are also invited to attend, compliments of New Student Services. If interested in attending, call ext. 7597 by the Thursday preceding each picnic supper to make a reservation and request a ticket(s). A ticket will be required for each person attending.

  • Special thanks to Gannon colleagues for their continued assistance with media interviews. Christopher Tremblay, director of admissions, on June 10 did an interview with WJET-channel 24 in which he discussed changes to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the impact of the changes on the admissions process.

  • Discover Presque Isle will be held Friday-Sunday, July 23-25. Volunteers are needed to sell frog buttons to visitors and to distribute brochures with information regarding the events. If you would like further information, or are interested in volunteering for a three-hour shift, call ext. 5618 for the shift schedule. The last day to sign-up is Friday, June 25.
