GANNON NAMES TAYLOR NEW PROVOST AND VP OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Gannon University has named Dr. Keith Taylor as its new provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Taylor, Ph.D., P.T., will begin his duties at Gannon on July 1. He will succeed Dr. Philip H. Kelly, who served in the position on an interim basis during the 2004-05 academic year. Kelly, a professor of English, will resume teaching in the fall semester.

Taylor’s appointment was announced by Gannon University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D. A university-wide selection committee participated in the search process and recommended the finalists to Garibaldi, who selected Taylor.

“Dr. Taylor has served as a professor and administrator for the last 16 years and has been very active in his academic discipline.  Even more, his understanding of Gannon’s mission and its Catholic traditions will resonate well with students, faculty, staff and alumni,” Garibaldi said.

Said Taylor, “Gannon University appealed to me because of its core values and tradition as a student-centered, comprehensive university that has very successfully combined liberal learning with professional education. In addition, the curriculum is supported by a dedicated group of faculty and administrators who have a unified vision for the university as well as an incredible commitment to working together.

“I was excited by the creativity and ideas I saw when I was on campus,” he added. “The university’s strategic planning and other processes have created an environment in which student learning can flourish.”

Taylor is a faculty member and successful administrator at Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y. Since 2000, he has served as dean of Daemen’s health and human services division and as a professor of physical therapy. In addition, he has served as assistant to the vice president for academic affairs for instructional technology and liberal learning.

He previously held a number of positions in Daemen’s department of physical therapy, including chairman and associate professor (1997-2001); coordinator of the  graduate physical therapy program’s orthopedic track (1991-96) and associate professor (1996-97), assistant professor (1991-96), and  instructor (1988-91) for the graduate and undergraduate programs in physical therapy.

He served on a number of committees at Daemen, including institutional assessment, Middle States Association Self-Study, strategic enrollment management, institutional technology, new library planning and development, distance education policy, health care studies curriculum development, service learning, strategic planning, and educational policies.

Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, a master’s degree in exercise science (orthopedic concentration), and a doctoral degree in anatomy and cell biology, all from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.

Taylor is a licensed physical therapist in New York and is an executive board member for the Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center. He also is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Conference of Academic Deans of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

He has authored or co-authored a number of publications and has given nearly 40 professional lectures and scholarly presentations.  He has also been active at Daemen in securing grants, including one for $412,800 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
