GANNON UNIVERSITY FACULTY NEWS

The following Gannon faculty are making news:

Patrick J. Barlow, Ph.D., assistant professor, psychology, was among the presenters at the 18th annual Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, held in Monticello, N.Y.

Barlow’s presentation, titled “Development of and Student Reaction to a Seminar in Positive Psychology,” was based on a seminar he teaches at Gannon. He described his approach to developing materials and assignments for the seminar as well as feedback from students.

The seminar explores the study of human strengths and virtues and topics such as optimism, happiness, forgiveness, and creativity.

Charles A. Bennett, assistant professor, finance, served as the Erie-area coordinator for a recent “Money Counts” conference held at the University of Pittsburgh.

The conference was designed as an educational session for high school teachers who currently participate as advisors in the Stock Market Game, as well as prospective advisors. The workshop was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Securities Commission and Heinz Endowments.

Bennett coordinates the local Stock Market Game.

Steven J. Ropski, Ph.D., professor, biology, gave a guest lecture at College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa. The lecture addressed service learning among college students.

Ropski is a member of the Gannon University Service Learning Advisory Committee. His presentation at Misericordia included the importance of service learning to students, how college professors can incorporate it into their classrooms, and how professors can identify funding sources for service learning projects.

In addition, Ropski also has been elected co-chair of the Mammal Technical Committee (MTC) of the Pennsylvania Biological Survey. He will serve a three-year term.
