MALLOY TO GIVE KEYNOTE ADDRESS, RECEIVE UT DILIGATIS INVICEM AWARD

Gannon University on Saturday will award 570 degrees at May Commencement, to be held at Tullio Arena.

The Rev. Edward A. Malloy, CSC, Ph.D., president of the University of Notre Dame, will give the keynote address. Malloy also will be presented Gannon’s Ut Diligatis Invicem Award. The award is inspired by the motto of the university’s founder, Archbishop John Mark Gannon: “That you may love one another.”

The graduates include 346 students receiving bachelor’s degrees, 197 receiving master’s degrees, two receiving doctoral degrees, 24 receiving associate’s degrees, and one receiving a post master’s certificate. Thirty-seven students will graduate summa cum laude, 64 magna cum laude, 51 cum laude, and two with academic honors.

The graduates include international students from 12 countries, including Bahamas, Canada, Colombia, Gambia, Germany, India, Kuwait, Pakistan, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition, four Gannon ROTC graduates will be commissioned as second lieutenants in a separate ceremony. The graduates, and their appointments, are: Thomas J. Cieslak, active duty, chemical corps; Kristen C. Donesec, education delay, medical service; Ashley E. Philbin, active duty, ordnance; and Carmen R. Toscano, reserve duty (National Guard), infantry.

Malloy, after having spent five years as Notre Dame’s vice president and associate provost, in 1986 was named by the Board of Trustees as the university’s 16th president. As president, he has continued to serve concurrently as a full professor in the department of theology, conducting a seminar for first-year undergraduates. He lives amongst Notre Dame’s students, making his home in a university residence hall.

His many accomplishments as university president include leading a successful capital campaign. “Generations” raised $1.1 billion for the school, surpassing the goal of $767 million. The school’s endowment of more than $3 billion places it in the top 20 largest among private colleges and universities.

Malloy has announced his retirement as president, effective June 30.

His strong ties to Notre Dame also include being an alumnus of the school and member of the Fighting Irish’s basketball team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1963 and master’s degrees in English (1967) and theology (1969) from Notre Dame.

In 1970, he was ordained a priest in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus and joined the school’s faculty in 1974. The following year, he earned a doctorate in Christian ethics at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. In 1998, Vanderbilt honored Malloy by establishing a chair in Catholic studies in his name.

Gannon previously awarded Malloy an honorary doctor of laws degree, one of the 12 honorary degrees he has been presented. Gannon honored him in September 2002, when he participated in the university’s Catholic Higher Education Speaker Series.

Malloy serves on numerous boards in higher education, including those for Vanderbilt, the University of Portland, and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). He has served as a chair of the American Council of Education (ACE) and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).
