GANNON EDUCATION
STUDENTS, FIFTH-GRADERS TO TURN OVER NEW LEAF
Twenty-five Gannon University students and local fifth-grade students on
Thursday, April 28 will spend the day exploring the Lake Erie Arboretum at
Frontier (LEAF).
The event, “Arbor Day,” will
run at the Arboretum from 9:30–10:30 a.m. and from 1:30–2:30 p.m. It is
designed to provide the fifth-graders, with the help of the Gannon
students, an interactive learning experience focusing on inquiry-based,
hands-on environmental science issues.
According to the web site
for the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), Arbor Day represents a
valuable opportunity both for the Gannon students and their younger
counterparts.
The project allows the
Gannon students to gain practical experience teaching science at the
elementary school level. For a variety of reasons, according to the web
site, education majors are getting fewer and fewer opportunities, as
students, to teach science in elementary schools.
For the fifth-graders, the
event serves as a fun and interactive way to learn about important
science-related topics.
Teachers from participating
elementary schools have indicated their support for the project in
surveys, the results of which have affirmed the benefits of the program.
In addition, the project has been characterized as a “best practice in
education” by the Council of Independent Colleges.
