C-SPAN'S SCULLY TO GIVE CHAUTAUQUA AT GANNON LECTURE

           An Erie native and senior executive producer/political editor at C-Span will be the featured Chautauqua at Gannon speaker.

Steve Scully, who since 1990 has been responsible for the planning and editing of all campaign programming for the national public affairs network, on April 26 will lecture on “The Road to the White House 2004.” Scully will present a review of America’s political landscape in the year to date and give his forecast for the remainder of the year, to include potential running mates, the upcoming conventions, the candidates’ platforms, the fall campaign, the November elections, and the Electoral College.

Scully also will offer thoughts on how the electoral process could be improved.

His lecture, free and open to the public, will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Zurn 104. Tom Becker, president of The Chautauqua Institution will preside.

Scully’s address will be 30th in the Chautauqua at Gannon series, which previously has featured nationally-syndicated columnist David Broder; CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley; political scientists Charles O. Jones, Norman Ornstein, Thomas Mann, Roger Davidson, Walter Oleszek, and Bert Rockman; Senators William Proxmire and Fred Harris, national political party chairs Charles Manatt and Frank Fahrenkopf; and military leaders General Perry Smith and Colonel Jack Jacobs, winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

More about Steve Scully

            Scully earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and political science from American University in Washington, D.C., and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Since 1990, Scully has been responsible for planning and editing C-Span’s campaign programming, including presidential and congressional elections. In addition, he manages a team of field producers who cover the courts, history, and international issues.

Scully also hosts the Washington Journal, a daily, live, three-hour public affairs program.

Prior to joining C-Span, Scully covered politics and local government as a reporter with WSEE-TV in Erie and also worked as a reporter and anchor at WHEC-TV in Rochester, N.Y.

In January of 2003, he assumed the Amos P. Hostetter Chair at the University of Denver, teaching a course on media, politics, and public policy issues via cable fiber line between Washington, D.C., and Denver.

            He also formerly taught at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, leading courses on basic news writing skills and on media ownership. In 1988-89, he was an instructor at Nazareth College in Rochester, where he taught a class focused on the comparative study of the media and campaign strategies.

  • Saturday, May 8 Spring Commencement: 2 p.m. at Tullio Arena. The Honorable Sean O’Keefe, administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, will give the keynote address and will be awarded an honorary degree.

  • The next Mid-Knight Pancake Breakfast will be held from 9:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sunday, May 2, in the Gannon cafeteria. Volunteers are needed for two shifts: from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and from 10:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. To volunteer, or to donate a fun door prize for the students, call Angela Jones at ext. 5800 or Christine Agnello at ext. 7410. The breakfast is provided, courtesy of the President's Office, to give students a break from studying for finals.

  • Last Words Presentation: Penny L. Smith, Ph.D., assistant professor, English, will give a presentation tonight, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Yehl Room. Her lecture will be based on the question, “If this were the last time you could speak to Gannon students, what would you say?

  • The late John “Doc” Waldron, former Dean of Business Administration at Gannon, will be honored posthumously at Cathedral Prep's Hall of Fame Dinner on April 27. The Waldron Campus Center is named after Waldron, who retired from Gannon in 1974. Monsignor James Peterson, a former longtime member of the Gannon faculty, is also one of the honorees.

  • VCR alert: Gannon University will be among the schools featured in an upcoming broadcast of the National College Review. The segment on Gannon, about seven minutes in length, will air locally at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21 on The Discovery Channel (Adelphia cable channel 20, Time Warner cable channel 46).

  • More than $400 was raised from the Saturday, April 3 auction for the Gannon Social Work Club Christmas Dinner. More than 50 paintings done by area children were auctioned off. The same day, Gannon students, faculty, and staff collected more than 5,000 pounds of food during the university's Golden Harvest Food Drive. Student Living sponsored the drive.

  • Special thanks to Gannon colleagues for their assistance with media interview requests. Scott Miller, assistant professor, accounting, did an interview with Peter Panepento of the Erie Times-News on the business aspect of the popular TV show The Apprentice. Special thanks also to Evan O’Polka, a Gannon student and a disc jockey at Gannon’s WERG radio station. O’Polka did an interview with Panepento on current prices for concert tickets. Thanks also to Chet LaPrice, WERG operations manager, for his help in facilitating the interview.

  • Gannon's Schuster Theatre will show Dirty Blonde from Wednesday-Sunday, April 21-25. The performance is directed by Shawn Clerkin. Monday-Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 3 p.m. Call ext. 7494 for reservations.
