NINE TO BE HONORED AT ANNUAL DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI DINNER  

        Gannon University on Saturday, April 16 will honor nine individuals at its annual Distinguished Alumni Dinner.

The event will begin with a 6 p.m. reception in Old Main, followed by a dinner in the Yehl Room of the university’s Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street.

The recipients are:

From the College of Humanities, Business, and Education:

Brian C. Fargo – Fargo graduated from Gannon in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration (accounting). He serves as vice chairman/CFO and is a partner with Capri Capital Limited Partnership, a real estate investment and advisory firm with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

Fargo joined Capri Capital in 1994 and also serves on the firm’s investment committee. With $7.3 billion in real estate assets under management, he and two partners have grown the company to become the largest minority-owned real estate advisor in the United States.

            Fargo earned a master’s of business administration degree (concentrations in finance and international business) from the University of Chicago.

 

Ronald J. Volpe – Volpe earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration (marketing) from Gannon in 1967. He is president of Hood College in Frederick, Md.

Prior to coming to Hood College, Volpe served as provost, vice president for academic affairs, and professor of business administration at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He also previously held several administrative positions at Gannon University, including dean of the Dahlkemper School of Business, director of the Small Business Institute (now the Small Business Development Center), director of the Center for Executive Development, dean of admissions and university marketing, and professor of marketing and management.

Volpe earned a master’s of business administration degree at Xavier University, and a doctorate in higher educational administration at the University of Pittsburgh. He pursued post-doctoral studies in academic leadership at Carnegie Mellon University.

 

From the College of Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences:

            Marie Knafelc – Knafelc graduated from Gannon in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Since 2004, she has worked as a physician with Anteon Corporation in Fairfax, Va., a provider of information technology solutions and engineering services to government clients. A retired U.S. Navy captain, she is contracted to the Navy to support its specialized diving programs.

            In 2001, she was transferred to the Naval Special Warfare Command Detachment in Pensacola, Fla.

            She is a member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and has authored or co-authored nearly 30 publications. Her awards include the Legion of Merit, the Navy Meritorious Medal (twice), the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal (three times).

            She earned a doctor of medicine degree from the Temple University School of Medicine and a doctorate in health and human performance from the University of Florida.

 

John F. Denslinger – Denslinger in 1970 earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Gannon. He is executive vice president, sales and marketing, for MuRata Electronics North America, Inc., a Smyrna, Ga., designer and manufacturer of electronic components for the telecommunications, computer/peripheral, automotive, industrial, and multimedia markets.

Denslinger serves as an officer and board director for both MuRata Electronics North America and MuRata Electronics Trading Mexico S.A. de C.V., for which he also serves as vice chairman and secretary.

As MuRata’s corporate spokesperson and industry representative, Denslinger serves on several associations, including chairman, ECA (Electronic Component Association); member, EIA (Electronic Industry Alliance) Board of Governors and its executive committee; and president, EDS (Electronic Distribution Show & Conference).

 

Richard G. Orlando, M.D. – A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, Orlando graduated from Gannon in 1976 (with honors) with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He founded and currently serves as clinical director of an ophthalmology practice, Columbus Ophthalmology Associates, in Dublin, Ohio. The practice has more than 60 employees, including seven doctors, as well as five offices and a free-standing surgical center.

Orlando also founded and serves as president of a charitable foundation that provides free screenings and medical care to residents of central Ohio. He continues to lecture and publish papers on ocular sports injuries.

He earned a doctor of medicine degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1979.

 

Young Alumni Award:

Brad and Tiffany (Pryor) Collins – As a student at Gannon, Brad Collins was chosen for the Joe Luckey Service Award and the Gannon University Medal of Honor. Tiffany Collins was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, an international nursing honor society. Both served as Gannon University student ambassadors.

            Brad graduated from Gannon in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, and, after earning a doctor of medicine degree from Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, began a residency in internal medicine at the Brown University Internal Medicine Residency Program in Providence, R.I.

            Tiffany graduated from Gannon in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is a registered nurse practitioner with Coastal Medical Women’s Heath in Lincoln, R.I. She previously worked as a registered nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care unit at Saint Vincent Health Center in Erie.

            They were married in 2002 at the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

 

Master’s Degree Award:

James C. New – New in 1974 earned a master’s of business administration degree from Gannon. In January 2004, he retired as chairman/CEO of Ameripath, Inc., in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., a provider of cancer diagnostics, genomics, and related services. New was a founding member of Ameripath and had served as chairman of its Board of Directors since January 1996.

Prior to joining Ameripath, he founded and had served as president/CEO and as a director of RehabClinics, Inc., one of the largest outpatient rehabilitation companies in United States. RehabClinics in 1994 merged with NovaCare, Inc.

 

Monsignor Wilfrid J. Nash Principles of Christian Conduct Award:

Timothy L. Conlon – Conlon graduated from Gannon in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial management and earned a master’s of business administration degree from St. Bonaventure University. He has served as a director, president, and chief operating officer of Viasystems Group in St. Louis since October 1998.

Prior to joining Viasystems, Conlon from 1997-98 was president/COO of Berg Electronics Corp. He also served as executive vice president/COO of Berg Electronics Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Berg Electronics Corp., from 1993-97.

Prior to joining Berg Electronics Group, Inc., Conlon was president of the cutting and welding group of Thermadyne Industries. Prior to joining Thermadyne, he spent nine years in the electronic connector industry, including serving in general management capacities.

 

 

OUR EVENTS

  • Thursday, April 14 Brown Bag Lunch: Will begin at 12 p.m. in the Founders Room, third floor of Nash Library. Don Gunter, director of campus police and safety, and Ted Marnen, assistant director of campus police and safety, will address the topic “How to Protect Yourself from ID Theft.” The lunch is open to Gannon students, faculty, and staff. Light Refreshments will be served.

  • Saturday, April 16 Financial Aid Workshop: Scheduled for 10 a.m. in room 1200 of Palumbo. Designed to help parents and students complete the FAFSA and to provide an overview of the entire financial aid process. Call ext. 7337 for more info.

  • Saturday, April 16 Neighborhood Health Fair: The fair, “A Neighborhood Beach Party! Summer Safety – Summer Fun,” will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the John E. Horan Community Center, 730 Tacoma Road, and is free and open to the public. This year’s event will focus on safety.

  • Saturday, April 16 Distinguished Alumni Dinner: The event will begin with a 6 p.m. reception in Old Main, followed by a dinner in the Yehl Room. The honorees are Brian C. Fargo ’71, Ronald J. Volpe ’67, Marie Knafelc ’74, John F. Denslinger ’70, Richard G. Orlando, M.D. ’76, Brad ’99 and Tiffany (Pryor) Collins ’99, James C. New ’74, and Timothy L. Conlon ’73.   • Wednesday, April 20 Chautauqua at Gannon Lecture: To be given by renowned presidential scholar Fred I. Greenstein, Ph.D., of Princeton University. Scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in room 104 of Zurn.

  • Thursday, April 21 English Awards Night: The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room. Award-winning poet, novelist, author, and essayist Nancy Willard will be the featured speaker. The winners of the 2004-05 High School and University Writing Contests will be announced during the ceremony. Call ext. 7504 for more information.

  • Thursday, April 21 Mayoral debate: Gannon will host a debate of candidates for the office of mayor of the City of Erie. Candidates scheduled to appear include current mayor Rick Filippi as well as Barry Grossman, Linda Bebko-Jones, Tim Pearson, Joe Sinnott, and Mary Taylor. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. in Zurn 104 and will be broadcast live by WICU and WERG. The debate is not open to the public. Members of the Gannon community are welcome to attend, but must show a Gannon ID at the door.

  • Thursday, April 28 Take Your Child to Work Day: A pizza lunch and ice cream social for participating Gannon parents and their children will be held in the Lower Lounge of the Student Services Building. Call ext. 5631 for more information.

HEARD ON CAMPUS

  • Special thanks to Gannon colleagues for their continued assistance with media interview requests. Dr. Garibaldi did an interview with WICU-channel 12 on The MBA, the contest in which students competed for the opportunity to win a Gannon scholarship. Tim Downs, Ph.D., dean of the College of Humanities, Business, and Education, did an interview with WICU-channel 12 on students and cell phone usage. During Sunday’s Spring Open House, William Eilola, dean of enrollment, and Christopher Tremblay, director of admissions, both did interviews with local television stations. Eilola spoke with WICU-channel 12 and WJET-channel 24, Tremblay with WSEE-channel 35. 

  • Through April 16, Nash Library will observe National Library Week. The library will have an informational display on the history of libraries, as well as fun books to read. On Wednesday, April 13, the library will have free coffee and doughnuts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call ext. 7666. In addition, the library will be having a book sale April 26-27.

  • Graduate Research Conference: The goal of the conference is to provide a forum in which graduate students present and share their research experience with the Gannon community. The Conference will be held April 22 in the Waldron Center. Copies of the abstract submission guidelines and eligibility requirements are available by calling Michelle Homan at ext. 5691.
