In addition, the winners of the 2004-05 High School and University Writing Contests will be announced during the ceremony. More about Nancy Willard

Willard is the author of 12 books of poetry, including the recently published In the Salt Marsh, as well as four books of stories and essays, two novels, and numerous children’s books. Her most recent books for young people are Cinderella’s Dress and The Tale of Paradise Lost.

She has edited one anthology of poems, Step Lightly: Poems for the Journey. Her poetry collection, Water Walker, was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Willard has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in both fiction and poetry, and one of her books, A Visit to William Blake’s Inn, was chosen for the Newbery Medal.

She has been described as “A magician of the simile and stunning metaphor … For Willard, all cosmic matter is magically configured, even angel-struck, not least of all everyday objects, animals, flowers, vegetables, and fruit.”

In addition, critics have said, “… words seem inadequate for describing the strange and wonderful worlds that Willard creates in her poetry and prose.”

Willard was raised in Ann Arbor, Mich. She currently teaches in the English department at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
