GANNON UNIVERSITY FACULTY-STAFF NEWS

Participation in the Leadership Institute, an intensive certificate training program in the theory and practice of leadership in dietetics, was limited to fewer than 500 of ADA’s nearly 70,000 members nationally. The American Dietetic Association, based in Chicago, is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The ADA promotes sound nutrition, health, and overall well-being.

Mughal is a member of the ADA’s Nominating Committee. She has been active locally in community service, has served in leadership positions in several professional organizations, and is a graduate of the Gannon University Leadership Erie Program.

Laurie Bednar, technical manager in the Gannon Office of Admissions, will represent the university at the annual Datatel Users’ Group Conference, to be held March 14-17 in Washington, D.C.

Datatel, Inc., headquartered in Fairfax, Va., is a provider of information management solutions and professional services for higher education institutions. The conference allows the company’s clients to share ideas, network with other members, and develop their professional skills.

At the conference, Bednar will join officials from Liquid Matrix (Buffalo, N.Y.), the company which last fall completed a redesign and upgrade of the university’s web site. She will participate in a presentation in the Enrollment and Student Services track in which Gannon’s award-winning web site (www.gannon.edu) will be used as a demonstration of effective e-recruitment initiatives.

David Tobin, Ph.D., assistant professor, counseling psychology program, has been selected to serve on the executive boards of two of the divisions of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association: the Pennsylvania Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (PACES), and the Pennsylvania Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (PASERVIC). He has completed his first year on the PASERVIC board.

In addition, Tobin recently learned that he was selected for a three-year appointment as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association.

He also has presented his research at a number of professional conventions and conferences, including last August’s annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Toronto.

Gong Chen, Ph.D., P.E., associate professor, mechanical engineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The designation of Fellow is conferred upon ASME members with a minimum of 10 years of active engineering practice who have made “significant contributions to the profession,” according to the organization, based in New York City.

Chen earned a bachelor’s degree from Xian Jiaotong University, and a master’s degree and doctorate from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is a 120,000-member organization focused on technical, educational and research issues of the engineering and technology communities. The society conducts one of the world’s largest technical publishing operations, holds numerous conferences internationally, and annually offers hundreds of professional development courses.
