DR. GARIBALDI GOES
TO WASHINGTON; SPEAKS AT NAACP SUMMIT
Gannon President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., was among the featured
speakers at a March 4-5 NAACP summit in Washington, D.C. Other speakers
from the summit included U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Reginald
Weaver, president of the National Education Association.
During a plenary session on “Preparing
and Sustaining Excellent Teachers for Our Children,” Garibaldi presented a
30-minute lecture titled “How Qualified Teachers are Prepared.” He was one
of two speakers during the session.
The summit, “From the Courtroom to the
Classroom: The Role of Teacher Quality in Closing the Achievement Gap,”
was designed to identify ways that states, districts, community-based
organizations, colleges of education, and administrators can increase,
retain, and train highly-qualified teachers in high-minority districts.
In addition to the NAACP,
other event sponsors were the American Federation of Teachers, the
National Education Association, the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards, and the National Alliance of Black School Educators.
The summit is part of the NAACP’s commemoration of the 50th
Anniversary of the landmark Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education Supreme
Court decision.
Garibaldi is
a member of New York University’s National Planning Committee for the 50th
anniversary of the Brown case.
