TWO GANNON
CHEMISTRY STUDENTS NAMED FINALISTS IN COMPETITION
Two Gannon University students have been named national
finalists in Chemvention, a problem-solving competition sponsored by the
American Chemical Society.
The students, Eric Grimm
of Industry, Pa., and Kevin Costanzo of Johnsonburg, Pa., will
attend the American Chemical Society’s national meeting in San Diego for
the finals of the competition. Grimm and Costanzo are sophomore chemistry
majors.
Grimm is a graduate of
Western Beaver County Junior-Senior High School in Industry. He is the son
of Curtis P. and Cynthia Grimm.
Costanzo is
a graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School. He is the son of William
and Carol Costanzo.
At the meeting, the students
will be accompanied by Betty Jo Chitester, Ph.D., assistant
professor of chemistry at Gannon.
Grimm and Costanzo were one
of only five teams nationally, or affiliate chapters, chosen as finalists.
During the meeting, to be held in March, they and the other student teams
will be evaluated on the basis of their final project reports.
The American Chemical
Society, based in Washington, D.C., has more than 159,000 members at all
degree levels and in all fields of chemistry. It provides a broad range of
opportunities for peer interaction and career development.
According to ACS’ web site, Chemvention
is a team-oriented competition in which students compete against each
other to solve what the society terms “common problems.”
