GANNON TO OBSERVE MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY THROUGH CAMPUS EVENTS

            Gannon University faculty, staff, and students will observe Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16, through a series of campus events.

            The schedule is as follows:

Sunday, January 15 – Special Sunday liturgies: offered in Gannon’s Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach Street, at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Monday, January 16 – Nonviolence Training: offered from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in room 219 of Gannon’s Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. The event is free and open to the public; call 814-871-7434 to register.

Intercollegiate Prayer Service: offered from 10:45-11:30 a.m. in the piano lounge of the Waldron Center. The service will feature Denise Jamerson, minister of music for Shiloh Baptist Church. Barbara Wiley, widow of the late Ben Wiley and an elder with Greater Calvary Full Gospel Baptist Church, will be the speaker. Hosted by Gannon University’s Student Government Association.

Friday, January 20 – Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra: this performance will be a tribute to Dr. King and will feature the Shiloh Baptist Church choir and Jamerson. The concert is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 130 East Fourth Street. For more information on the concert call 814-871-5467 or 814-871-7755.

Thursday, Jan. 26 – Howard University Jazz Ensemble: The ensemble, directed by professor Fred Irby III, will perform a number of jazz selections. The Howard Ensemble has performed around the world and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a performance that was broadcast by CBS-TV in December. The performances at Gannon are free and open to the public and will be held at 1:30 and 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Center.

  • Friday, January 13 Spring 2006 Faculty and Staff Community Meeting: 3 p.m. in the Yehl Room.

  • Wednesday, January 18 Financial Aid Workshop: Will offer students and their parents an overview of the entire financial aid process, including help on filling out required forms. The free workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. in room 1200 of the Palumbo Center.

  • Wednesday, January 18 Women’s Leadership of Gannon University reception: 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Gitnik Manse. More info can be found below, under the Heard on Campus section.

HEARD ON CAMPUS

  • Gannon University Executive on Campus program: as part of  this program, the University on Tuesday, Jan. 17, will welcome back to campus Ralph J. Pontillo. Pontillo graduated from Gannon with a bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1985. Currently, he serves as president and CEO of the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania, the largest regional organization of its kind in the United States. The MANP serves more than 4,500 member companies that employ more than 120,000 people. Dr. Garibaldi invited Pontillo back to campus so that he could meet with faculty, staff and most importantly, our current students. Ralph’s communications and management expertise and vast knowledge of political science and manufacturing will serve as an invaluable resource for our students.
