"Your manuscript is both good and original; but the part that is good is not original, and the part that is original is not good." ~Dr. Samuel Johnson
Computers have revolutionized the way we write, allowing us to compose through typing quickly and editing easily. Most word processing programs have even been equipped with proofreading tools such as spell checkers that also check grammar and point out our errors. Why then, is learning to spell and write without computers still necessary?
As helpful as these tools are, a computer is still a machine and can only process the mechanics of what you are saying, not the meaning. They are not able to identify errors such as using the word “there” instead of “their.” Nor are they able to identify your thesis statement, whether you have enough support for you idea and purpose, or if your conclusion fits with the rest of your paper.
So, when you’re done typing, make sure to re-read and revise. Just because your printed page looks professional and finalized, the writing may not be. If you have trouble revising or would like some feedback from a peer, come visit us at the Writing Center
