Athletic Training

Gannon University has several graduate assistantship positions available for the 2006-2007 academic year. These positions are available through the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and the Department of Athletics to certified athletic trainers (ATC). Students receive a partial tuition waiver and a stipend. The Graduate Assistantships are a unique opportunity for the certified athletic trainer who is eager to become involved in their chosen career, yet wanting to expand their scope of practice by becoming a physical therapist. Gannon currently is utilizing several athletic trainers who are also enrolled in the physical therapy program to work within the University’s Athletic Training Department.

Qualifications for Athletic Training Graduate Assistantship:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, sports medicine, or a related area;
  2. certification by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) as an athletic trainer (ATC);
  3. acceptance in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Gannon University;
  4. on campus interview;
  5. three (3) letters of recommendation.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
The GA will serve a primary role as an ATC to the Department of Athletics (under the direction of the athletic training staff) during the academic year (August to May). The GA will also serve as a lab assistant in the physical therapy program (under the supervision of the physical therapy faculty).

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. identify, manage, and rehabilitate athletic injuries to student-athletes;
  2. provide on-site (on campus) coverage of athletic team practices and competitions as determined by the athletic training staff;
  3. provide off-site (off-campus) coverage of athletic team practices and competitions as determined by athletic training staff; off-campus travel may be required (as long as this does not interfere with the student’s class/lab schedule);
  4. supervise the rehabilitation of athletic injuries; update the team physician and coaching staff of student-athlete’s status;
  5. refer to the team physician all cases which require advanced professional services;
  6. initiate and maintain accurate medical history and records of all injuries and treatments rendered;
  7. assist with the administration of all required pre-season physical examinations for student-athletes;
  8. supervise and evaluate student athletic trainers (as directed by Head Athletic Trainer);
  9. assist intercollegiate teams with training and conditioning requirements;
  10. assist with daily management and operation of Athletic Training Room;
  11. serve as a liaison between student-athletes, parents, medical personnel, and insurance providers to include initiation and completion of necessary reports, forms, follow-up documents as required.
