The objective of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in counseling psychology is to develop capable professionals who are able to practice independently as psychologists. The program seeks to cultivate proficiency in four main areas: core psychology, psychotherapeutic intervention, assessment/diagnosis, and research. Training is provided in individual, group, career counseling, and marriage and family therapy, as well as assessment and diagnosis in each of these modalities. Students also complete coursework on supervision and provide supervision.

Unique features of our program include:

  • A live supervision model, in which faculty, who are licensed psychologists, observe doctoral student therapists and provide immediate feedback.
  • Participation in the Psychological Services Clinic, a freestanding clinic operated by the counseling psychology program that provides free therapy and assessment services to the community.
  • Departmental colloquia in which regional speakers provide specialized training and information in areas of diverse populations, special topics in therapy, and legal and ethical development as psychologists.
  • Widespread opportunities to collaborate with faculty and students on independent research, conferences, and publications.
  • A low student to faculty ratio, to accommodate students' individual needs and interests.
