Recommended Timeline: Four-Year Pre-Dental

College Year 1 (Freshman)
    Fall Semester
  • Meet with freshman/sophomore advisor to discuss pre-med program
  • Complete first semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirement science courses: BIOL 122/123, CHEM 111/112
    Spring semester
  • Visit web sites of American Dental Association and American Association of Dental Schools (see Links)
  • Begin exploring opportunities to shadow dentists, volunteer at dentists' offices, etc.
  • Complete second semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirement science courses: BIOL 124/125, CHEM 114/115
  • Meet with freshman/sophomore advisor to discuss curriculum and progress
    Summer
  • Begin to accumulate experience shadowing dentists, volunteering, etc.
  • Take summer classes if necessary
College Year 2 (Sophomore)
    Fall Semester
  • Touch base with freshman/sophomore advisor early in semester
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Complete third semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirement science courses: CHEM 221/222, Additional courses in academic major
  • Begin to investigate internship or research opportunities
  • Meet with freshman/sophomore advisor
  • Declare Academic Major by end of semester (see Declaring a Major)
    Spring Semester
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Continue accumulating clinical experience
  • Identify summer internship or research opportunities
  • Complete fourth semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirement science courses: CHEM 224/225, Additional courses in academic major
  • Investigate admission requirements of specific dental schools by visiting the American Association of Dental Schools web site (see Links)
    Summer
  • Continue to gain clinical, research, or internship experience
  • Take summer classes if necessary
College Year 3 (Junior)
    Fall Semester
  • Meet early with Director of Pre-Dental program
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Continue to gain clinical or research experience
  • Complete fifth semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirement science courses: PHYS 105/106, Additional courses in academic major
  • Investigate Links:

  • Begin preparation for spring/summer DAT
    Spring Semester
  • Schedule an interview with the Director of the Pre-Dental Program
  • Meet with Director of the Pre-Dental Program to discuss: Completion of University, major, and dental school requirements, dental school options, and the application process
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Continue to gain clinical or research experience
  • Complete sixth semester of pre-dental curriculum and core requirements science courses: PHYS 108/109, Additional courses in academic major
  • Continue to investigate (see Links):
    • Dental Admission Test (DAT)
    • Information on ADA site
    • Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS)
  • Ask for letters of evaluation from faculty (2 in sciences, 1 in humanities)
  • Continue preparation for spring/summer DAT
    Summer
  • Take DAT late spring/early summer
  • Complete autobiography and deliver to Director of Pre-Dental
  • Confirm that letters of evaluation have been sent to Director of Pre-Dental
  • Complete AADSAS application, including summative letter of evaluation
College Year 4 (Senior)
    Fall Semester
  • Complete supplementary application materials for schools to which you have applied
  • Meet with Director of Pre-Dental Program to discuss: Completion of University and Major requirements Status of application/admission process at schools to which you have applied
  • Work toward completion of degree requirements
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Continue to gain clinical or research experience
  • Interview at dental schools
    Spring Semester
  • Meet with Director of Pre-Dental to discuss status of admission process
  • Complete degree requirements
  • Participate in pre-professional activities (attend speaker presentations, etc.)
  • Complete clinical or research experience
  • Continue to interview at dental schools
  • Make interim and final decisions about dental school choice
  • Immediately notify schools that you decide not to attend
  • Graduate
