Physician Assistant Students enjoy success on campus and off campus during clinical rotations and experiential learning opportunities within the PA profession.
As a part of Business Practice for Physician Assistants, a graduate course that discusses the regulatory oversight of the health care field, Professor Holly Jodon and Dr. Catherine Gillespie accompanied six students (Melissa Harding, Megan Kimmy, Joseph Kitts, Emily Kuchta, Sarah Merry, Nicole Ricketts) on an experiential learning opportunity to Harrisburg. Their host, Representative Curtis Sonney (R-4th District), provided a synopsis of the overall process from a legislator’s perspective while Attorney John MIlliron, a lobbyist for the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA), presented an overview of the regulatory process. The experience also included a tour of the capitol building and a personal visit to the House floor.
Three Gannon University Society of PA Students (GUSPAS) (Jesse Steffl, Susan Bonnar, Alicia Winters) attended the SAAAPA Assembly of Representatives (AOR). AOR is a two-day meeting held during the AAPA's annual conference. The participants of the AOR include the Student Academy Board of Directors (SBOD) and one representative from each officially recognized PA program student society. The AOR establishes Student Academy policy, elects and directs the activities of the SBOD for the following year.
Four Gannon students (Jamie Kline, Heather Palermo, Tamara Orr, Jamie Wortman) competed in the National Medical Challenge Bowl, a friendly "Jeopardy" style competition coordinated by the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. The competition is held during the AAPA's Annual PA Conference. Forty-eight teams, with three PA students to a team, compete to answer medical-related questions including such subjects as physical diagnosis, microbiology, anatomy, OB/GYN, pulmonary, cardiology, primary care, emergency medicine, and surgery.
