Catholic Mission

To understand the effects of pollutants on humans and the environment, and to learn how to control pollution, you must study science, math, and engineering. The programs demand strong analytical skills and a broad understanding of environmental problems in the context of modern society.

For both undergraduate and graduate students, our emphasis is on putting the tools learned in the classroom into practical use. All students have the opportunity to participate in field work and laboratory work as part of on-going research and monitoring projects.

Successful graduates from our programs have had little problem finding positions with governmental agencies, environmental consulting firms, and on the environmental, health, and safety staffs of major industrial employers.

Program Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes (ABET)

The department offers two undergraduate majors:
  • The B.S. in Environmental Science program places an emphasis on understanding natural processes and how human activities disturb the natural world and affect human health and safety. Particularly capable students in Environmental Science may continue into the 5 Year Combined B.S./ M.S. program.
  • The B.S. in Environmental Engineering, a much more math intensive program, provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to design solutions to pollution-related problems, such as water and wastewater treatment, soil and groundwater pollution, and industrial waste management. This program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.

Both part-time and full-time programs are available for graduate students.
