Editorial Policy and Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

Publication Policy

Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association is intended to serve those occupationally involved in air pollution control and waste management through the publication of timely and reliable information in formats that include technical manuscripts as well as "Notebook" papers.

Technical papers are contributions that describe and interpret the results of original investigations. They are subject to a minimum of two external peer reviews.

The Notebook offers a forum for rapid disclosure of new technical or administrative studies, or for significant comment on previously published papers. Publication of a note manuscript will not preclude later consideration of a technical paper on the subject. Note manuscripts are subject to two external peer reviews. If the note manuscript is a comment on a previously published paper, the note manuscript will be published with a reply from the author(s) of the previously published paper.

Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; and that its publication has been approved by all coauthors and the responsible authorities at the institute where the work was conducted.

If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors must agree to reassign the copyright of that manuscript to the Air & Waste Management Association. This allows the Association to perform all normal supplementary functions of publishing inherent to information dissemination, such as granting permission for reproducing an article, dealing with requests from abstracting and information centers, permitting free fair-use copying by libraries and individuals, and more.

Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate to The Editor, Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association, One Gateway Center, Third Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Publication is contingent upon the recommendation of peer reviewers, and previously published material will not be considered for peer review. If pertinent references are "in press" or unpublished, copies or information should be furnished to enable the reviewers to evaluate the manuscript.

Letters to the Editor are welcome and may be published at the discretion of the Editor.

Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

The manuscript preparation process is intended to be kept as simple as possible so that authors can concentrate on the manuscript content. Authors should not include any design or complex formatting for manuscripts, such as two-column text formats or unnecessary changes in font, type size, page depth, and page width. Complex formatting will be stripped out by the Journal typesetters and may delay publication of the manuscript. Manuscripts should include only simple attributes such as bold, italic, superscript, subscript, and underline to a specific letter, word, or words.

Copy Requirements

Authors should submit four copies of each manuscript for the review process. Manuscripts also must be submitted on disk after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Authors must complete a copyright transfer form and provide keywords for their papers prior to acceptance. Editorial office staff will supply the copyright and keywords forms to authors.

Authors are expected to follow the style conventions detailed in the most recent edition of The ACS Style Guide, published by the American Chemical Society in Washington, DC. Manuscripts should concisely provide essential information, avoiding wordiness, duplication, and unnecessary detail. Manuscripts should include the following components:

  • A concise title, avoiding the use of acronyms if possible;
  • A list of all authors and their affiliations, with the city and state or country for those affiliations;
  • An "Implications" statement of 100 words or less, explaining the practical implications of the manuscript for law makers, policy makers, and others;
  • An abstract of 200 words or less, summarizing the work's purpose, methodology, results, and conclusions;
  • Text, tables, and figures, following the formats and style outlined herein;
  • References, numbered and cited in consecutive order as they appear within the text, and styled according to The ACS Style Guide; and
  • An "About the Authors" statement, providing the name, title, affiliation, and complete mailing address for each author (excessive biographical information is unnecessary).
Manuscripts must be typed double-spaced on one side of 8.5"ÊxÊ11" white paper, including references, tables, and figure captions. Times Roman 12-point is the preferred font style. Allow at least a 1-inch margin on all sides. Text should be typed flush left on the page; do not use right-justification or hyphenation. The first paragraph after each section heading should be flush left, but the first sentence of all subsequent paragraphs within that section should be tabbed in five spaces. Use one blank line between each paragraph and between headings and text. Place one space (rather than two or more consecutive spaces or a return) at the end of each sentence; this also applies in centering type. Do not insert page breaks within text, but consecutively number all pages. Footnotes are inappropriate within the text; rather, include footnoted material in the references section of the manuscript. Do not italicize common Latin words or phrases, such as "i.e." Do not use the letter "O" to indicate a zero, or a lower case "L" to indicate the number one.

Headings

Manuscripts should be subdivided into major sections (e.g., introduction, experimental methods, results, conclusions). Acknowledgments and references are also treated as major divisions.
  • First-level headings should be typed bold, in all capital letters, and flush left.
  • Second-level headings should be typed bold, in initial capital letters, and centered.
  • Third-level headings should be typed in italics, in initial capital letters, and paragraph-indented; this heading then should be followed by a period, three typing spaces, and the subsequent text.

Equations

Equations should be numbered consecutively as they appear within the text. They should be centered horizontally, with the equation number in parentheses and positioned flush right on the same line as the equation. Use care in positioning super- and subscripts, and avoid superscripts that may be confused with exponents.

Nomenclature

Throughout the manuscript (including tables and equations), care should be taken to consistently distinguish between upper and lower case letters. Use consistent units of measurement, and give dimensions for all terms. Acronyms may be used within the manuscript; however, they must be defined at their first mention within the text.

References

References must be numbered in consecutive order as they are cited within the text, using Arabic numeral superscripts. Authors are expected to style references according to the guidelines listed in The ACS Style Guide. Each reference should be typed in double spacing, ending each reference with a double return. Do not use an automatic footnoting or referencing function in word processing. Do not use "et al." in references; rather, list all authors for each reference.

Examples of reference styles:

  4. Norman, L.O. U.S. Patent 4 379 752, 1983.
  5. Kanter, H. Ph.D. Thesis, University of California at San Francisco, Dec. 1984.
  6. Sherma, J.; Beroza, M. Manual of Analytical Quality Control for Pesticides and Related Compounds; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. U.S. Government Printing Office: Washington, DC, 1979; EPA-600/1-79/008.
  7. Roe, A.B. J. Pharm. Sci., in press.

Tables

Tables should be grouped together at the end of the manuscript rather than positioned within the text. All tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals as they are cited within the text. All tables require captions; list the caption above the corresponding table. For each caption, place the table number in bold type, flush left, followed by a period and a space. Capitalize only the first word of the remainder of the table caption, and place a period at the end of the caption, as follows:

Table 1. Results of air quality tests conducted in 1988 at an urban site.

Footnotes may be used within tables. Place footnoted material below the corresponding table.

Figures

Figures may be submitted as line drawings or black-and-white photographs. In either case, photocopies cannot be substituted for originals. Line drawings must be prepared in black ink and submitted on 8.5" x 11" white paper or similar substance, such as tracing paper or Bristol board. Authors are encouraged to submit figures on disk. If figures are supplied on disk, a clean printout or original of the figures must also be supplied. Photographs must be continuous-tone black-and-white original photos; screened photos or color photos are not acceptable as originals. For all figures, authors should consider the reduction ratio to ensure that all lettering and numbers within the figures will be readable after reduction.

Figures should be grouped together at the end of the manuscript rather than inserted within text. All figures must be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals as they are cited within the text. All figures require captions. List figure captions together on one page, and clearly identify the actual figures placed at the end of the manuscript. For each caption, place the figure number in bold type, flush left, followed by a period and a space. Capitalize only the first word of the remainder of the figure caption, and place a period at the end of the caption, as follows:

Figure 1. Comparison of air quality in 1988 at two urban sites.

When applicable, be sure that both the figure captions and the figures contain corresponding labels for multiple parts, such as (a), (b), and (c).

Disk Formatting Requirements

After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the word-processed manuscript must be submitted on disk. Extraneous codes within the document should be eliminated. The preferred storage medium is a PC formatted 5-1/4-inch or 3-1/2-inch disk in . Microsoft Word version 6.0 or higher is preferred, but Word Perfect version 6.0 or higher is also acceptable. (Excel or similar spreadsheet programs should not be used.) It is imperative that authors supply disks in either Microsoft Word or Word Perfect, because codes and formats can be lost in conversion. A hard copy of the final manuscript must accompany the disk, along with original figures.

Each manuscript should be submitted in a single electronic file on one disk. File names should contain the author's last name and a three-letter descriptive extension, such as SMITH.DOC.

Print one double-spaced copy of the disk file(s) to submit with the disk(s), to ensure that the hard copy of the manuscript matches the electronic file(s). Print a directory for each disk submitted. Label each disk with the author's name, the manuscript title, the letters JA&WMA, and the name(s) of the program(s) used to create the files. Write protect the disk(s).

Page Proofs

Before a manuscript is published, page proofs will be sent to the senior author of the manuscript. Authors are responsible for checking their proofs for accuracy and for clearly marking any corrections on the proofs. The Association assumes no responsibility for data or text errors printed in the Journal if authors do not correct such errors on their proofs. Failure to return proofs promptly, as outlined in instructions provided with the proofs, could delay publication of the manuscript.

Page Charges and Reprints

A $50 per printed page charge will be applied to manuscripts published in the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association. Payment must be received before the paper is published. Page charges may be waived or reduced in special circumstances where financial hardship is an issue, at the discretion of the Editorial Review Board.

The page charge fee includes 50 reprints. An order form and price list for additional reprints will be sent to authors with their page proofs. This form may be returned with the proofs or at a later date; however, it must contain the author's name, the manuscript title, the month of publication, and the author's purchase order number.
