Abstract:
Computer and Information Science Department at Gannon University has developed an intranet-based "Computer Science On-line Placement Test" replacing conventional paper tests. While providing user-friendly environment, the system has mechanisms to protect the system from unauthorized users knowingly or unwittingly accessing the test materials or test results. Although the current system is used to test the freshmen's computer literacy level in OS/Web, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database, this secure database-driven web system is developed as a template so that it can be easily adapted to other tests by only changing the test materials and configuration. This end-user modifiable system provides management tools such as updating the questions, setting up the security, managing the user information. This system also provides the reporting tools to display the statistics for further research.
