Abstract:
These days, most web applications seriously designed use database in back-end and provide a keyword search page for visitors to find information stored in the database. The search page usually consists of a query page (keyword search), a page with a list of search results, and a detailed information page. The search page is mostely custom-made to provide proper information to the visitors. However, it is time consuming and duplicated job for web developers to create a customized search page for every web sites. To avoid a repeated process of creating a similar search page for different web sites, a template-based keyword search engine was developed. This search engine provides a step-by-step procedure for web developers to create a search page for their visitors without writing any single script code. This generic search engine template visualizes all fields of tables in a database for web developers to select the fields to search and display. Then, the query is automatically created based on the display format the web developers selected. At the end of this user-friendly process, a search page for visitors is created for a web site. Unlike other search engines, this genetic search engine template is particularly designed for a web site with database. This search engine has been used to implement a search page for literature survey part of IMIA Dental Informatics Working Group web site (http://www.ecs.gannon.edu/IMIA). As the database of dental informatics literature grows, the search page will provide valuable information of dental informatics literature. This generic search engine template runs on an ASP-enabled web server. Currently, this search engine only supports MS Access database.
