Annual Summer Biological Travel Study
June 15 through June 26, 2008

PURPOSE
The Biology Department at Gannon University believes that an acquaintance with a variety of ecological habitats and experiences is important as a way of supporting the true meaning of a liberal studies education. It is the purpose of this travel-study program to introduce students to a variety of ecological learning experiences that enhance one's awareness and education background.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will examine many aspects of Yellowstone National Park. Topics to be covered include grizzly bears (actually tracking them), wolf reintroduction, impact of fires, geysers and past volcanic activity, geological history including earthquakes, and the herbivores of the park (bison, moose, antelope and elk.) One day will also be spent at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman reviewing their dinosaur exhibit and getting a behind-the-scenes tour. Professors David J. Gustafson and Steven J. Ropski conduct the class.  The program will be joined by experts in each area who will spend time wtih the class.
Limited space availability for non-credit travelers.


OBJECTIVES
  • To study the geological history and volcanic processes native to Yellowstone National Park Ecosystem.
  • To study the fauna and flora of Yellowstone National Park Ecosystem.
  • To investigate current issues involved in the management of the Yellowstone National Park Ecosystem.

PROGRAM EXPENSES

Tuition Students must register for the following 2-credit course: BIOL384-Field Zoology/Biology Travel Studies Yellowstone

Undergraduate credits will range from $490 per credit to $525 per credit. Graduate Credit available upon request(Course: GENV693)

Cost: $1700 for students; $1900 for adults

- All Lodging & Meals (except 7 evening meals)

FACULTY
DAVID J. GUSTAFSON, Distinguished  Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Biology at Gannon University, has taught in numerous travel study programs throughout North America. He has visited the park on many occasions to study and photograph the native plants and animals. He holds degrees in both biology and environmental education. An experienced naturalist, wildlife photographer and traveler, his interests include bird identification and animal ecology.

STEVEN J. ROPSKI, Professor of Biology at Gannon University, is an experienced traveler and wildlife ecologist. Actively involved with numerous environmental organizations and professional societies, he holds degrees in biology and ecology. An experienced field mammalogist, he recently participated in a summer program at Yellowstone National Park sponsored by the National Audubon Society.

SCHEDULE

Class will meet on Sunday, June 15, 2008 on the Gannon Campus. Overnight lodging and evening meal can be provided by Gannon University. Departure is scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2008. Breakfast and van transportation to the Erie International Airport will be provided. The trip will end on June 26, 2008.


EQUIPMENT

Wilderness cabin lodging will be provided while at Yellowstone National Park. Running water and shower facilities are available in the cabin. Both light weight and warm clothing will be required, for one can anticipate some chilly weather in the evening and early morning hours in the park. Camera and binoculars are desirable. Plan for comfort and convenience, but keep luggage to a minimum. A duffel bag is the preferred type of luggage.
