Catholic Mission

- Prof. David J. Gustafson, Chairperson

"On behalf of the department faculty, staff, and students, I wish to thank you for visiting our website.  We have a remarkable, vibrant faculty with broad research interests.   We are proud of our students' rich accomplishments in academics, research, and co-curricular activites, especially our Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, which is consistently among the finest chapters in the country.

Biology, as the science division which studies life, instructs students in an appreciation of  life from the cellular level to its complex whole-earth relationships. With the enhancement of the required liberal studies core curriculum, the department affords students the background to further analyze and develop an understanding of and a respect for life reflecting Catholic tradition.  Three members of the Biology Department hold undergraduate degrees from Gannon University.

Many of the biology courses offered attempt to challenge students to acquire an inquisitive mind with the ability to apply scientific reasoning. With this appreciation of the scientific method and the required theology and philosophy courses, students can apply this knowledge for the benefit of others, as they pursue their graduate studies and professional careers in research, teaching, and the healing arts.

The Biology Department maintains a diverse set of courses allowing majors to specialize on cell and molecular, or organismal, or ecological levels of study.

The faculty, with their understanding and appreciation of the science of biology and their respect for students, attempt to bring the total education of the students to fruition.

The biology department is currently composed of twelve full time and one half-time faculty members, along with several retired professors."
