Team Handball RUles
1. A team is made up of 6 players, 5 in the field and 1 goalkeeper. you must have a total of at least 5 players to start a game.
2. Games will be two 15 minute halves. the clock will only stop for official time outs or during a team timeout. substitutions are performed on the fly at midcourt. game length will be increased for the playoffs.
3. scoring - each goal is worth 1 point, no OT will be played in the regular season. There will be a 5 minute overtime period in the playoffs followed by a shootout if necessary.
4. standings - 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss.
5. A player may not control the ball for more than 5 seconds (5 second call). there is no limit on dribbling (double dribble is illegal). the ball may not be contacted below the knee except by the goalie. a player may not dive after a ball, nor can they pass the ball to themself.
6. you may use your body to obstruct your opponent but pushing (extending of the arms, holding, tripping or hitting is not permitted.
7. a penalty throw will be awarded when an offensive player is fouled in a scoring position. this is a judgement call by officials. The officials will protect the shooter. the official will be looking for an attempt on the ball not the body. if you intentionally wrap up your opponent, a 2 minute penalty will be awarded.
8. a free throw will be awarded on all other fouls. They are taken immediately from the spot of the foul. defenders must be at least 10 feet from the free throw and the throw must be taken within 3 seconds. all free throws and re-starts require a pass in or direct shot on goal. if instructed to take the ball out up top, this must be done beyond the yellow line.
9. the arc represents the goalie box. no player but the goalie is permitted in the arc 9or on the line). this violation will result in a turnover or wave off any goal scored. if you shoot and score but a member of your team is in the arc if is no goal.
10. it is illegal to play the ball back to your goalie while they are in the arc. this will result in a turnover. in order to play the ball back to the goalie, the goalie must exit the arc.
11. immediate re-start after a goal. if a goal is scored the goalie scored may grab the ball and put it right back in play. there is no time to celebrate, play defense.
12. if there is no shot clock set up, then the delay rule will be in effect. delay rule : in the last 5 minutes of the game the team with the lead must keep the ball on their offensive side of the field during their possession. failure to do so will result in a turnover with immediate re-start. a deflected ball by the opponent will not result in a delay violation.
13. time penalties : 2 minutes for :
- abusive or foul language, complaining to a ref, flagrant fouls (as viewed by the ref)
ejections for :
- repeat offenses of above named calls, fighting or unsafe play
* players will sit out the full penalty and do not return if a goal is scored, the team will play shorthanded for the entire 2 minutes.
* if a player is ejected, they will not only sit out the remainder of the game, but the next game as well.
14. officials calls are final. appeals must be made in writing immediately following the game to the supervising director.
15. rosters must be finalized as of game 1. no additions may be made after the start of your teams first game.
16. normal forfeit rules in effect.
