Engineering/Math Award Contest

Learn more about Gannon University’s School of Engineering and Computer Science! High school sophomores and juniors considering pursuing a career in the fields of engineering and computer science are invited to participate in the Applied Math Contest and attend Spring Open House. Gannon University offers programs of study in Chemical, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical and Software Engineering, as well as, Computer Science and Management Information Systems.

Students who have achieved above average grades in college preparatory math courses are encouraged to join us on Sunday, April 20, 2008. Participation in the Applied Math Contest is a great opportunity to win one of three scholarships in the amounts of $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000. After the contest students are welcome to attend Open House to learn more about careers in engineering and Gannon’s personalized approach to education.

Guidelines
The Applied Math Contest is optional. Students do not have to enter the contest to attend Open House.

  1. Participants must be high school sophomores or juniors.
  2. Registration forms must be submitted to Gannon University’s Office of Admissions by Thursday, April 17, 2008.
  3. Participants must sign-in at registration by 10:00 am on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
  4. Each student may bring his/her own calculator.
  5. The Applied Math Contest is a multiple choice exam of Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Trigonometry.
  6. Students will have one hour to complete the exam.
  7. Deception in the competition will result in ineligibility.

Dependents of Gannon University employees are not eligible for the contest.

Students winning more than one Applied Math Contest will be awarded the higher amount of the scholarships and not a combination of the two.

Scholarship Awarding
First Place - $3,000 per year; a total value of $12,000*
Second Place - $2,000 per year; a total value of $8,000*
Third Place - $1,000 per year; a total value of $4,000*

* Students may renew the scholarship for up to three years, by achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better at the end of each academic year.

Important Information

  1. Exams will be reviewed by a faculty committee from the School of Engineering and Computer Science the week following the exam.
  2. Scholarships will be awarded to students earning the highest scores on the exam.
  3. The Financial Aid Office reserves the right to adjust Gannon University grants and scholarships based on additional tuition assistance from other sources.

To receive the scholarship, students must:

  1. Apply for admission by December 1st of their senior year of high school.
  2. Meet full-time admission requirements for the School of Engineering and Computer Science:
    • A minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or better
    • SAT = 1000 (ACT = 21) or better
    • Rank (if available) in the top 25% of their class
  3. File the Gannon University Financial Aid Early Version Award (EVA) Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  4. Enroll at Gannon as a full-time undergraduate student in the fall semester directly after high school graduation.
  5. Enroll in a degree seeking program in the School of Engineering and Computer Science.
