Student Chosen for ATHENA Award
Hannah E. Kirby honored as outstanding college student
Gannon University student Hannah E. Kirby recently became the first-ever local recipient of the ATHENA Young Professional Award.

The award, which honors an outstanding college student in the community, is given to a student who:

• Is an emerging leader demonstrating excellence and creativity.

• Provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others locally, regionally, nationally, and within her college community.

• Serves as a role model for young women both personally and professionally.

Kirby, of Waynesburg, Pa., is the daughter of Barbara Kirby and the late James Kirby. She is a graduate of Waynesburg Central High School and is a senior mechanical engineering major at Gannon.

After Kirby graduates in May, 2010, she plans to continue her education at Gannon University by pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

She was nominated for the ATHENA Young Professional Award by Karinna M. Vernaza, Ph.D., associate professor, mechanical engineering, Gannon University.

Vernaza in her nomination wrote, “Hannah is a role model for young women in K-12 and in college. Through her constant and active participation at Gannon University, she has shown a balance between academics, spiritual life, personal, and social life to her female classmates, colleagues, friends, and incoming students. By participating in outreach activities for elementary and middle schools students, she has positively impacted the lives of so many young girls by educating them about career opportunities in engineering and the importance of a college education to achieve their goals.”

Kirby serves as a University Ambassador at Gannon and is serving as president of the campus chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) . During the 2008-09 academic year, she served as secretary for the campus chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) .

She also actively participates in community service and is a leader for Adelphai women’s faith-sharing group.
