Students to GIVE Day to Service
Sept. 19 effort will include Gannon alumni for the first time
Gannon University students, faculty, and staff gave more than 77,000 hours of community service during the 2008-09 academic year.

The University’s annual GIVE Day is just one of many events contributing to the total. This year, some 1,000 students have signed up to participate in GIVE (Gannon’s Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere) Day by volunteering their time at more than 40 sites throughout the community.

For the first time, Gannon University alumni will participate in GIVE Day and will work alongside students, faculty, and staff. Alumni will be volunteering their time in Erie and in a number of cities across the country, including Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Chicago.

After gathering for breakfast at the Gannon Hammermill Center, the volunteers will work at sites locally from approximately 8:45-11:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Local sites, along with a description of the type of work to be done, include the following:

Asbury Woods/Brown’s Farm, picking up trash in and around Walnut Creek.

Blended Spirits Ranch, 7371 Sterrettania Road, help set up for Fairview Fright Nights.

Booker T. Washington Center, 1720 Holland St., clean up inside and outside of gym and classrooms.

Brevillier Village, 5416 East Lake Road, yard work, clean up of grounds.

Cathedral of St. Paul, 134 West 7th St., general cleaning.

CHOSEN Mission Project, 3638 West 26th St., tear apart used medical equipment.

City of Erie Graffiti Task Force, graffiti removal along 12th Street.

Community of Caring, 261 East 21st St. and 245 East 8th St., landscaping and washing walls of dining room.

Community Shelter Services, 202 West 9th St., cleaning at Lodge on Sass, washing windows, etc.

Crime Victim Center, 125 West 18th St., general cleaning.

Earth Force, 730 Tacoma Road (Horan Apartments), and 6270 East Lake Road (Glinodo Center), International Coastal Cleanup.

East Bayfront Watch, 200 block of East 2nd, landscaping and beautification.

Erie City Mission, working at 904 Pittsburgh Ave. (West Erie Plaza Thrifty Shopper), moving furniture and general cleaning.

Erie DAWN, 330 East 10th St., outdoor cleanup.

Erie Downtown Partnership, beginning at 515 State St., students will cover 70-block area from Holland to Sassafras and from 14th Street to the Bayfront, picking up trash. In addition to the students, Gannon alumni will help with this project.

Erie Playhouse, 1158 East 12th St. and 13 West 10th St., general cleaning and office setup.

Erie United Methodist Alliance, 1033 East 26th St., painting.

ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum, 420 French St., general cleaning.

First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 West 7th St., fall clean up.

Gridley Park, West 6th and Liberty streets, cleaning and landscaping of park. Gannon alumni will help with this project.

Habitat for Humanity, 7 Sherman St., Union City, working on a building site.

HANDS (Maryvale/St. Joseph), 2543 West 8th St. and 517 Maryland Ave., assist residents and general cleaning.

House of Healing, 3716 McClelland, helping prepare for fundraiser/garage sale.

House of Mercy, 2005 Woodlawn Ave., landscaping and general cleaning.

International Institute, 457 East 6th St., general cleaning.

L’Arche, 10575 and 10603 N. Edgewood Drive; 337 East 8th; 1408 Sumner Drive; and 1028 West 9th St., pulling weeds and landscaping, gardening, general cleaning, and washing windows.

Little Italy, 425 West 18th St., International Coastal Cleanup.

Mary the Apostle Catholic Worker, 621 East 22nd St., general cleaning.

Perry Square Alliance, Perry Square, fall cleanup.

Presque Isle State Park, International Coastal Cleanup (beach). Gannon alumni will help with this project.

Quality of Life Learning Center, 2046 East 19th St., landscaping/painting.

SafeNet, interior and exterior work.

Second Harvest Food Bank, 1507 Grimm, helping to re-pack, label, and sort food.

Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 1645 West 8th St., Adopt a Highway cleanup.

St. Patrick’s Irish Festival, Rainbow Gardens, Waldameer Park, setup for festival.

Sunrise Assisted Living, 1012 Bayfront Parkway, fall cleaning.

Therapeutic Riding Equestrian Center, 8342 Platz Road (Fairview), clean up.

Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive, outdoor garden maintenance.
