Opportunity Knocking at ETI
Erie Technology Incubator on Aug. 29 will host special event for entrepreneurs
Gannon University’s Erie Technology Incubator (ETI) is offering local and regional entrepreneurs a unique opportunity.

The ETI on Saturday, Aug. 29 will host “Opportunity Knocks,” designed to help area entrepreneurs and individuals hoping to start a business assess whether their idea or product is viable and marketable. Opportunity Knocks is free and open to anyone who wants an expert, on the spot consultation.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ETI, 130 West 8th St. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

“Opportunity Knocks is just that, an opportunity to bring an idea, a widget, a passion, a device, or a dream that has been tucked away in that budding entrepreneur’s attic, garage, workshop, or mind, and present it to professionals who work every day to make those ingredients come together and then come to life,” said Russell Combs, executive director, Erie Technology Incubator.

During the event, the entrepreneurs will sit down individually with local economic development and business officials to explain and discuss their idea. The participants will have 15 minutes to present their idea, product, and/or business plan, and should be prepared to answer questions related to the product, potential markets, financing, competitive advantage, etc.

Based on their presentation, the entrepreneurs then will be presented with one of three options:

Go back to the “drawing board” – If the idea/proposal as presented is deemed “not viable,” the entrepreneur will receive detailed information on putting together a business plan, should they wish to continue developing their product/idea.

Help them make the necessary contacts – If the entrepreneur has a viable idea and is a good candidate to take it forward, the entrepreneur will be directed to receive further assistance, including working with the Gannon University Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

Further assessment – If the entrepreneur is further along in the process, such as a completed market study, business plan, financial commitments from funders, etc., they will meet on the spot, or Phase Two, with other economic development/business officials to further discuss their proposed idea/product.

Financial sponsors of the event include Gannon University, the University’s Erie Technology Incubator and Small Business Development Center, eBizITPA, the Technology Council of Northwest Pennsylvania, Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, and the Keystone Innovation Zone.
