Education Certifications Approved
New programs will help University meet Chapter 49 requirements
Gannon University’s School of Education has received approval to offer two new certification programs designed to help the University meet Pennsylvania’s Chapter 49 requirements for prospective teachers.

With the approval, granted by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Gannon in the upcoming fall 2009 semester will offer both Early Childhood Grades PK-4 and Middle Level Grades 4-8 certificates. Within the middle-level program, Gannon will offer single and dual concentrations in English, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Teacher candidates – students pursuing degrees in education and related fields – enroll in the particular certificate program that corresponds with the grade level they hope to teach upon their graduation.

Chapter 49 regulations govern teacher education programs throughout Pennsylvania.

“PDE’s blessing is a credit to how hard our School of Education worked to get these certifications ready for the fall semester,” said Janice M. Whiteman, interim director, Gannon School of Education.

“The certifications are also an example of our continuing commitment to preparing our graduates to perform at the highest levels once they begin their teaching careers,” Whiteman added.

In addition to the certification approvals, PDE also awarded Gannon’s School of Education “special designation.” PDE’s reviewers noted that Gannon “substantially meets State Standards” in areas that were evaluated as part of the approval process.

Specifically, PDE noted that “…aspects of your program have been judged… to be a promising model or Innovative Practice.” Those aspects include:

Candidate Competencies – Gannon makes use of data-driven decision making, demonstrates professionalism, and instills in its education majors the importance of a “focus on every child.”

Faculty Activities and Collaboration – Gannon was commended for training faculty members to use educational technology and for assessing faculty members in their educational technology knowledge and skills.

Field Experiences and Student Teaching – Gannon does an exemplary job of training its faculty to assist, guide, and evaluate education majors. PDE also commended Gannon for collaborating and working with “placement sites” – the schools at which Gannon education majors complete their student teaching – in areas like design, assessment, enrollment, and clinical placement related to student teaching.

New Teacher Support – Gannon was lauded for its “documented means” of supporting its education majors for two years following their graduation.
