Event to Foster Exchange of Ideas
Symposium to be hosted by Gannon's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
Faculty members from Gannon University and neighboring colleges and universities will participate in a collaborative effort designed to enhance classroom learning when Gannon hosts its third annual Regional Symposium.
The symposium, to be hosted by Gannon and the University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, May 18 in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West 7th St.
The symposium, “Fostering Deep Learning,” is designed to give the participants a venue to share with colleagues their strategies and techniques. The participants later can apply what they learned to their own classes.
The conference’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Barbara Millis, director of the Teaching and Learning Center at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Millis received a doctoral degree in English literature from Florida State University and frequently offers workshops at professional conferences and colleges and universities. She has published articles on a variety of faculty development topics, including cooperative learning, peer classroom observations, and course redesign.
Millis’ presentation, “Using Cooperative Activities to Foster Deep Learning,” will run from 9:15 a.m. to approximately 11:45 a.m.
The afternoon portion of the event will include peer-reviewed, concurrent presentations. In addition to faculty presenters from Gannon, faculty from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia will present.
The topics include using statistical programs and visual statistics to teach business statistics; cooperative learning in an upper-level biology elective; basic interactive science, engineering, medical, statistics, business, and finance applications; and using service learning to teach the skills and processes of reflection.
The Symposium will conclude at approximately 3 p.m.
