STEM Group to Visit Campus
Union City High School students enrolled in science program will tour new Patient Simulation Center
Gannon University on May 1 will welcome to campus nearly 40 female students from Union City High School for a tour of the University’s Robert H. Morosky Academic Center, 150 West 10th St.
The students are members of Union City High’s STEM program, designed to stimulate students’ interest and performance in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The school’s program is part of Pennsylvania’s STEM Initiative.
Union City’s successful program includes nearly 40 academically strong students, each of whom has a grade point average of at least 3.25.
The students will visit Gannon from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. They will tour the Morosky Academic Center, including its Patient Simulation Center and Radiologic Sciences Lab, as well as classroom areas. The Simulation Center has 14 human patient simulators and is designed to mirror a hospital environment, with areas that simulate an operating room, emergency room, labor/delivery area, pediatric unit, examination room, and a seven-station critical care area.
From 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the students will participate in “hands-on” group learning activities focusing on areas such as nursing, physician assistant, radiologic sciences (digital imaging), and respiratory care (ventilation therapy). Following a lunch in the Beyer Hall cafeteria with Gannon University faculty and students, the Union City students will attend an admissions presentation before departing campus.
The Pennsylvania STEM Initiative is a statewide partnership dedicated to preparing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for global competitiveness through a statewide strategy of enhanced science, technology engineering, and mathematics education and career development opportunities for students and communities. The strategy is executed by the statewide STEM Initiative in cooperation with five regional STEM Networks across Pennsylvania.
