Relay for Life May 1
Gannon students, faculty, and staff hope to raise $25,000 through annual effort
Some 30 teams, comprised of more than 150 Gannon University faculty, staff, and students, will participate in the University’s annual Relay for Life.

Student organizers have set a goal of raising $25,000 for the American Cancer Society through the event. Each participant is raising a minimum of $25 as an entrance fee, and has been encouraged to raise $50 or more as an “incentive donation.”

The relay will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, May 1 at the field outside the University’s Carneval Athletic Pavilion, 130 West 4th St. It will continue until 1 a.m. Saturday, May 2.

At 5 p.m., a Survivor Reception will be held to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. At 9 p.m., a luminaria ceremony will remember loved ones lost to the disease.

There will be other activities throughout the event, including performances by the Gannon Dance Team and Gannon Choir. The Gannon Cheerleading Team will perform a “Fight Back” cheer at 11 p.m. to signify the efforts to put an end to cancer.

An awards ceremony will be held at 12 a.m. to recognize the support given and participation by the students, faculty, and staff. Gannon’s radio station, 90.5 WERG-FM, will broadcast at the event.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
