Guantanamo Prosecutor to Lecture
Lt. Col. Darrel Vandeveld of Millcreek will give guest lecture at Gannon April 22
A Millcreek Township resident who had a prominent role in the controversy over the handling of military prosecutions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be at Gannon University for a guest lecture on Wednesday, April 22.
The lecture, to be given by Lt. Col. Darrel Vandeveld, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 2005 of the University’s Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach St. It is free and open to the public.
Vandeveld became the center of media attention last fall after he decided to resign his position with the military prosecutor’s office at Guantanamo, the Office of Military CommissionsProsecution.
According to local and national news reports, Vandeveld’s resignation stemmed from his involvement in a case he was prosecuting against an Afghan detainee. The detainee was accused of using a grenade to injure three people, including two U.S. soldiers, riding in a jeep in Afghanistan in 2002.
Vandeveld’s concerns partially were related to the full and fair disclosure of evidence in the case.
Another lawyer involved was quoted as saying that Vandeveld had resigned because Vandeveld “could no longer continue to serve ethically as a prosecutor.”
The lecture is sponsored by the Gannon University Legal Studies Club.
