Erie-GAINS has both a geographic and programmatic focus.
With the University's central and strategic location in downtown Erie, Gannon is uniquely positioned to maximize its impact in a well-defined, contiguous and manageable University Neighborhood. The focused efforts on the University Neighborhood will allow Gannon to maximize its impact toward increasing the sustainability and viability of downtown Erie and the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.
As illustrated below, the Erie-GAINS Neighborhood encompasses the area bordered by Presque Isle Bay to the north, Parade Street to the east, 11th Street to the south and the Bayfront Parkway to the west, which consists of all or part of Census tracts 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 10.
Erie-GAINS focuses on urban development issues including, but not limited to, education, health and well-being, the economy, public safety, neighborhood revitalization and the environment.
Education is a cornerstone to economic, social, and community well-being. An educational relationship between the Gannon and Erie community is essential for expansion and prosperity of our downtown neighborhoods.
Healthy lifestyles lead to a greater overall quality of life. Gannon and its community partners implement health and wellness screening programs, health education fairs, and risk prevention programs that benefit the community greatly.
Gannon University and its network of entities including the Erie Technology Incubator and the Small Business Development Center have been at the forefront of regional economic development and the City of Erie’s revitalization and business development initiatives. Gannon University and its partners are dedicated to aiding entrepreneurs in the start-up of their businesses and educating others in business.
Gannon University is committed to creating alliances to enhance the quality of life in its community through antipoverty efforts, safety and security initiatives, days of service, and cultural events.
Erie-GAINS will help create a healthier region and a healthier planet for present and future generations. Its initiatives include creating green space and green buildings, recycling and waste management, local food sourcing, improving air and water quality, and alternative energy/ energy efficiency.
