GANNON BASEBALL DROPS HOME
OPENER TO WAYNE STATE
 
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University baseball team played its first pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home games of the 2008 season against Wayne State Friday afternoon; however, the Golden Knights were unable to defeat the Warriors, dropping game one 6-1 and game two 16-3.
   
Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joe’s Collegiate) scored Gannon’s only run in the first game. Dziomba reached first on an error in the sixth inning and reached third on the error. The junior reached home on an error by pitcher Anthony Bass.
   
Bass earned the win, striking out 13 batters and allowing seven hits and one walk in all seven innings.
   
Nick Lisckai (Paris Ontario/Paris District) suffered the loss. Lisckai struck-out four batters and allowed four hits and five walks in seven innings.
   
Wayne State (4-7, 2-0 GLIAC) opened game two with two runs, but Gannon answered back with a run at the bottom of the first.
   
Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) reached first after being hit by a pitch. Dziomba scored Harpster with an RBI double to right field.
   
The Golden Knights (2-6, 0-2 GLIAC) scored again in the third inning courtesy of Dziomba’s second RBI of game two which scored Shane Braendel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) from second base.
   
Gannon’s final run came in the fourth inning. Braendel scored Chris Miller (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) with an RBI single down the left-field line.
   
Wayne State’s Dane Little earned the win. Little struck-out 12 batters and allowed six hits and one walk in seven innings.
   
Harpster recorded the loss. The junior struck-out one batter and allowed seven hits, eight runs, and seven walks in four and two-thirds innings.
   
Gannon and Wayne State square off again at Gannon University field on Saturday, March 23. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
