GANNON BASEBALL SPLITS
DOUBLEHEADER WITH MERCYHURST

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University baseball (5-17, 1-9) team took on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Mercyhurst College (14-16, 3-11) Wednesday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field and split the doubleheader. The Golden Knights opened the twinbill with a 5-4 loss in 10 innings, but rebounded in game two to win 1-0.

In game two, Gannon’s Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joe’s Collegiate) scored Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) from first base off an RBI triple in the opening inning.

Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) made a diving catch off of John Bilke’s line drive in center field to end the game.

Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) earned the win, putting him at 2-1 on the mound for Gannon. Radwan struck-out five batters and walked one. The sophomore gave up four hits in seven innings.

Mercyhurst’s John Mang (1-5) suffered the loss. Mang allowed one run, three hits, and two walks in five innings while striking-out four.

Game one went into extra innings after Gannon produced three runs to tie the contest 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

An error by Mercyhurst pitcher John Morris with bases loaded created the opportunity for Drew Rojek (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) and Ryan Tann (Fairview, Pa./Cathedral Prep) to cross home plate.

Dziomba scored the tying run off a suicide squeeze by Radwan.

The teams closed the first inning with one run apiece. Mercyhurst put two runs on the board in the fourth and one in the seventh. The Lakers won in the 10th inning off of Greg Turk’s RBI double.

James Ludwig (2-1) earned the win after 2 2/3 innings in relief. Ludwig struck-out four, walked one, and gave up four hits.

Ryan Schreiber recorded the save. Schreiber relieved Ludwig in the 10th, striking out two batters.

Gannon will play a pair of conference doubleheaders this weekend at Northwood University. Games one and two begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The final pair begins Sunday at noon.
