BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER
WITH NORTH DAKOTA
FORT MEYERS, Fla. – Down 2-0 entering the bottom
of the third inning in its second game against the University of North Dakota
at the Gene Cusic Tournament Wednesday afternoon, the Gannon University baseball
team (3-5) put five runs on the board and never relinquished the lead.
The Fighting Sioux (2-3) started scoring with one run in each of the first
two innings.
Gannon’s Jim Travers (Erie, Pa./Cathedral
Prep) and Ford Eisenman (Erie, Pa./Villa
Maria Academy) each singled to get on base in the third. Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis)
scored Travers on an RBI single, and Eisenman reached home plate on an error.
With the bases loaded and Radwan on third, North Dakota pitcher Derek Biermaier
walked Ryan Tann (Fairview, Pa./Cathedral
Prep) to send the sophomore home.
Chris Miller (Franklin, Pa./Franklin)
and Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West
Middlesex) crossed home courtesy of John Pichette’s (Horseheads, N.Y./Elmira-Notre
Dame) two-run RBI single.
Radwan scored the Golden Knights’ final run of the game in the fifth on a
Hoffman sacrifice fly.
North Dakota put one run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but it
wasn’t enough to overtake Gannon. The Golden Knights won game two 6-4.
Gannon’s Radwan recorded the win. The Franham, N.Y., native threw five strikeouts
and allowed three walks and three earned runs in all seven innings.
Biermaier suffered the loss. The Fighting Sioux pitcher spent four innings
on the mound.
Each team recorded seven hits. Gannon made three errors; North Dakota had
one.
Gannon lost game one 10-7.
Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St.
Joe’s Collegiate) scored Eisenman in the first inning, but the Fighting
Sioux answered back with a run of their own.
Radwan reached home on a fielder’s choice in the third to put Gannon up by
one, but North Dakota responded again with a tying run.
The Fighting Sioux took a one-run lead by scoring in the fourth and managed
to add three more in the bottom of the fifth.
Gannon overtook the lead again after scoring five runs in the sixth.
Tann scored Hoffman after the freshman reached second on a double. Shane Braendel’s (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep)
double sent Tann home.
Radwan followed with a two-run RBI double that scored Braendel and Brandon Crum (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown).
Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell)
reached home on an error.
North Dakota took the lead back and ulimately won by scoring three runs in
the bottom of the sixth and holding Gannon scoreless in the seventh.
The Fighting Sioux’s Cody Randt earned the win with two-thirds of an inning
on the mound. Jameson Benson recorded the save with one inning of service.
Braendel suffered the loss. The freshman pitched one inning and allowed two
hits, two walks, and three earned runs.
Gannon out-hit North Dakota 9-8 and made five errors. The Fighting Sioux
made two errors.
The Golden Knights take the field again at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 to
face Lake Erie.
Saturday and Sunday’s games against Davis & Elkins have been postponed
due to inclement weather conditions. A make-up date has not been announced.
A complete box score will be available upon the team’s return to Erie.
