DOUBLEHEADER WITH USP
FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Gannon University baseball
team split a doubleheader with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
(USP) during its second day at the Gene Cusic Tournament.
Gannon (2-2) won the first game 5-4, but the Devils pulled out an 8-7 victory
over the Golden Knights in game two.
USP opened the first game with one run in the top of the first and posted
one more run in the third and two in the fourth.
Gannon mounted its winning comeback in the fifth inning.
Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville, N.Y./St
Joe’s Collegiate), Greg Radwan (Farnham,
N.Y./St. Francis), Kolten Hoffman
(West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex), and Shane Braendel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep)
each recorded a single and a run in the inning.
Junior Ford Eisenman’s (Erie, Pa./Villa
Maria Academy) double steal put him at third and a fielder’s choice
sent him home.
Gannon recorded seven hits and three errors; USP made one error and tallied
eight hits.
Peter Grouios (Toronto, Ontario/East York
Collegiate Institute) earned the win. The Gannon freshman threw two
strikeouts, walked one batter, and allowed three earned runs in six innings.
Drew Rojek (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier)
is credited with the save. Rojek pitched the last inning, walking no batters
and denying the Devils any runs.
Zach Noel suffered the loss. The Devils pitcher threw for just one inning.
Gannon opened game two with two runs in the top of the first.
Eisenman singled and stole second to reach scoring position. The Erie, Pa.,
native found his way home courtesy of a fielder’s choice.
Chris Miller (Franklin, Pa./Franklin)
batted-in Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell)
to put the Golden Knights up 2-0.
Gannon put three more runs on the board in the second inning.
Eisenman’s RBI sent Ryan Tann (Fairview,
Pa./Cathedral Prep) across home plate. Harpster’s RBI single opened
the door for Jim Travers (Erie, Pa./Cathedral
Prep) and Eisenman to score.
The Devils produced two run in the bottom of the second.
Miller reached home plate in the third inning on a squeeze play by Tann.
USP answered back in the bottom of the inning with four runs to tie the game
at six apiece.
The Devils put two more on the board in the sixth to take the lead.
Radwan’s run courtesy of Miller’s RBI single in the seventh inning was not
enough for Gannon to tie the game up, giving USP the 8-7 victory.
The Golden Knights out-hit the Devils 14-8. USP made two errors.
Braendel suffered the loss. The freshman threw five strikeouts, walked one
batter, and allowed two earned runs in four innings.
USP’s Philip Maher recorded the win. Maher pitched six innings.
