GANNON
BASEBALL KICKS OFF 2008
AT GENE CUSIC TOURNAMENT
FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Gannon UniverSity
baseball team opened the 2008 season on Saturday, March 1 against Lewis
(Ill.) University and Hillsdale College at the Gene Cusic Tournament.
Gannon defeated Lewis 3-2 and fell 8-6 to Hillsdale.
Jonathan Dziomba (Williamsville,
N.Y./St Joe’s Collegiate) scored Gannon’s first run of the new
season off a fielder’s choice in the top of the second inning.
Junior Ford Eisenman (Erie, Pa./Villa
Maria Academy) scored Gannon’s second run of the game at the top
of the third in rare form.
With Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St.
Francis) at bat, the count at 0-2, and the Golden Knights with
two outs, Eisenman stole home.
Eric Harpster gave Gannon its final run in the same inning after
capitalizing on a throwing error by Lewis’ catcher.
The Flyers posted runs in the third and sixth innings, but they were
not enough to overtake Gannon.
Lewis out-hit Gannon 7-3 and had three more errors than the Golden
Knights with five.
Radwan earned the win for the Golden Knights. The sophomore pitched all
nine innings, recorded 10 strikeouts, walked two batters, and allowed
one earned run.
Lewis’ Jon Guzzo was credited with the loss. Guzzo pitched six innings
and allowed one earned run.
Gannon took the field again in the afternoon against Hillsdale.
The Chargers opened the game with one run in the first, but the Golden
Knights answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second.
Radwan hit an RBI single to send Dziomba home from second base.
Shane Braendel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral
Prep) and Radwan scored on errors.
Hillsdale put up four runs in the third and two more fourth, but Gannon
responded with three runs.
The bottom of the fourth opened with Radwan reaching first on a walk.
Freshman Kolten Hoffman (West
Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) followed with a two-run homer.
Eisenman walked, stole second, then stole third, and finally scored on
a pass ball.
Despite a big inning, the Golden Knights were unable to takeover the
lead. Hillsdale put one more run on the board in the seventh and took
the game 8-6.
The Chargers tallied nine hits; Gannon had five. The Golden Knights
recorded no errors, while Hillsdale made three.
Gannon pitcher Evan Euler
(Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) suffered the loss. The junior
threw two strikeouts, walked four batters, and allowed six earned runs
in four innings.
Hillsdale’s Dan Rhodes was credited with the win. Rhodes pitched two
and two-thirds innings.
