Gannon University believes inventive thinkers have the ability to solve problems and develop new ideas, especially in the realm of technology. If you are interested in balancing business needs, technology and human factors in order to yield a successful product, Gannon’s software engineering program can help prepare you for an inventive career in the specification, design and development of high-quality software systems. As a software engineering major, you will learn how to apply the principles of computer science, engineering and analysis to the design, creation, testing and evaluation of software systems. Starting with a foundation in problem-solving and programming, Gannon’s software engineering program is prepared to educate students in an interdisciplinary academic environment and enhance their communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Software engineering is an emerging profession, with significant roots in computer science and systems engineering. To provide a specialized context for their studies, Gannon’s software engineering students take nine credits focused in an “application domain” — a concentration area where software engineering techniques are practiced. The different application-domain sequences focus on a particular industry, and serve as technical electives. Students choose their application-domain from such areas as information systems, embedded systems, other engineering fields or other scientific disciplines.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, software engineers are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations between now and 2010. Software engineers typically earn $43,000 to $85,000 annually.
Where will your inventive mind take you?
The program is designed to produce graduates who are capable of developing high-quality software systems. This outcome includes developing technical competency as well as leadership and communication skills necessary to analyze, design, verify, validate, implement and maintain software systems.
The computer and information sciences (CIS) department houses computer science, management information systems and software engineering majors.
The School of Engineering and Computer Science, in cooperation with The Dahlkemper School of Business Administration, offer a special program leading qualified undergraduates to a bachelor of science in engineering degree and a master of business administration degree. This program is completed in five years of full-time study (including three summers).
• Gannon’s bachelor of science in software engineering is one of only 25 such programs in the United States and one of 60 in the entire world. Gannon is one of only two catholic colleges that offer this degree.
• The software engineering program is built around the developing ABET accreditation criteria, and draws upon the experience of our technical faculty, including faculty with professional certification in software development.
• While not required of all students, software engineering undergraduates are encouraged to participate in internships to complement their education. While encouraged to find opportunities in their home communities, many companies recruit on-campus for software engineering interns, including General Electric, Lord Corporation, Erie Insurance, Progressive Insurance, State Farm Insurance and others.
• As part of their education, software engineering majors study ethics. This component broadens the training and preparation students receive and complements the technical expertise gained. As our society and quality of life becomes more dependent upon digital technology, software engineers will need a foundation in ethics in order to act responsibly as developers of the technology.
• In 2006, software engineering was ranked by Money Magazine as the ‘best job’ in America, with strong growth prospects, potential for creativity and strong average salaries. Software engineering has consistently been rated among the top four professions in the U.S. by various nationwide surveys.
