Gannon University believes human beings cannot be satisfied with merely knowing the “what” of things happening around them; they want to understand the “why” of the human condition. If you are interested in personal exploration of “ultimate questions”—issues of human nature and human destiny, how we should live, the nature of the world around us, and the being and nature of God on whom we are dependent for our existence, then Gannon’s philosophy program will give you the opportunity to explore. As a philosophy major, you will not only learn about major philosophers at work on these important human issues, but you will also participate in the process by developing your own skills for creative thinking, rational argument and responsible judgment.
Philosophy is studied for its own intrinsic value, since, as Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Nevertheless, the study of philosophy can also lead to successful careers as well. Recently, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported philosophy majors on average did significantly better on the standardized tests that are used as a basis for admission to law schools, graduate colleges of management, business administration and more.
What issues will you explore?
The philosophy program is housed in the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, providing opportunities for students to interact with students in many other disciplines.
